The locals call them barn spiders.

Unless they're hanging over a doorway,
I leave them alone. They tend to stay on their web
and they're too fat to get in any cracks in the place.

Here's a small one my daughter photographed:

They usually live above our picture window,
and they're fun to watch. It's like our own National Geographic.
I sure feel bad for the males though...
Those poor guys are nothing but an empty shell
after "marrying" them.

They have no problem eating bumble bees or large dragon flies.
And they're pretty aggressive about going after them too.
I'm afraid if I had a barn, it would be full of holes from bjb123 getting rid of the little buggers. (WITH A SHOTGUN NO DOUBT)

I'd love to share more of my thoughts on tarantulas, but my knowledge of other arachnids is very limited. I'm not sure what native spiders you do have in OK, other than the brown tarantula. But I'd be happy to try to field questions. I may not know the answer, but I probably know where to find the answer and sort out fact from fiction.
It's more like distrust as opposed to fear.
(They have little bug brains...)

Even cute, furry animals have bad days...
Imagine while you're holding your "sweet"
tarantula while she's having a bad day..

That's the kind of luck I'd have with those things...
I've been stung by:
Bees - honey and bumble, yellow jackets, wasps,
hornets, jellyfish and probably more I'm not thinking of...

Q: I was under the impression that tarantulas
have hairs like fiberglass that stick in your skin?
True or false? I've seen pictures of them shaking those hairs out.

I tend to leave them alone because they leave me alone.
Are you sure bjb wants to live in OK?
After a while, those shot shells can get expensive.

My rule on bugs is this...

If it's inside, it's going to die.
If it's outside and not venomous, I let it live.
If it's venomous and it might bite me someday... It dies.
(Forgive me thevez2, but that would include tarantulas
unless you can convince me different. We don't have them here.)

She'd have to be a pretty good shot and have a pretty accurate rifle.
(Although, I might consider that myself.)

When it comes to tarantulas, I think a shotgun IS the way to go...
Unless you're indoors...
That could do a LOT of damage to the house.

I always wanted to get good enough with darts
to take out bugs indoors...
(A little Spackle would repair the damage.)
I'm good, but I'm not THAT good.

Darts? Now thats something that I never gave any thought to. I'm pretty good at darts. I use to shoot "Back-up" in a dart league. That sounds like it would be alot of fun .
"Hey honey, let see who can pin the little bugger to the floor first." WWIIIIISH THUNK, Ah man did you see that.

It does. Makes an interesting pattern in log walls.

I'd LOVE to be that good!
I don't like squishing them with toilet paper...
Darts would be so much neater...
(Not sure about how humane it would be though?)

Can you imagine the mess squishing a tarantula would make?

Sorry thevez2, I wouldn't do that to your pets...
Unless they were roaming about my house.
