Over 5,400 people work for the Choctaw Nation in Durant, which will soon open a huge new HQ building. New stores have been opening. Durant has been strongly rivaling Stillwater as the state's fastest growing city outside of Oklahoma City and Tulsa metros for quite some time.
Oh I know, I grew up in Durant and visit quite often, and am also Choctaw. I meant that because of the Metroplex's growth, industry have been moving into Durant to be near Dallas but want to be in Oklahoma because of the cheaper business climate. And Durant's proximity to Dallas also supports the casinos and hotels, as 80-90% of the customers are from Texas. There's plans to expand the resort again and to build a third hotel tower, which may very well could be correlated to the Metroplex's growth.

I agree completely. Durant is0adding jobs because of its proximity to DFW metro. In addition to the ones you and Stillwater mentioned and most notable to me is a steel recycling plant ($450M investment) going in east side of Durant. This project was sought by 5 states and multiple cities in each state and it landed in Durant. No doubt these jobs are added by proximity to DFW.

The steel plant takes scrap metal and melts it at 1300 degree in an electric powered vat to make rebar. 100 trucks of scrap a day and 100 trucks of rebar a day is estimated size of production by one measure.

Durant is 80 miles from the Plano Legacy West project under construction now. This 250 acre project is sold out with 100 acres bought by Toyota to build a new N. American HQ, they are currently moving 250 jobs a week in from Torrance, Ca. Chase has a 25 acres campus going up for 6000 job on top of the 5000 Toyota is bringing in. Liberty mutual is adding 4000 jobs this year as well. So 15000 Direct jobs and an estimate an additional 30-40000 Indirect jobs coming as well. DFW is the fastest growing metro in the USA and Durant receives some spill out growth.

I know a Durant native who lives on a ranch south of the Casinos and has driven to work at a North DFW metro campus for 40 years. The growth is greatest in the north DFW quadrant, this is the closer to Durant side of the metro. There is a plan to extend the Dallas North Tollroad up to near Lake Texoma where it will intersect US 75 12 miles south of Durant and the growth is strong along this route.

Much of Durant growth is outside the city limits to the NW toward the lake some what. I believe the city growth cited is just the growth within the city proper. The county grow is probably much greater.

Durant feels more DFW centric than tied to OKC or Tulsa to me because of the proximity

I've always thought Durant was a nice little town even when it was basically just a college town. They seem to have had some visionary leadership.

Poteau is a contrasting town. For years it had great potential and went nowhere. They spent all their time screaming about getting the Muskogee turnpike extended to Poteau when what they really needed was a four lane to Ft. Smith, AR where the work was.

The state Turnpike authority told them to forget about it. I then asked a city leader whey they didn't want to push a four lane to Ft. Smith. His response was "we don't want to be a bedroom community to Ft. Smith." This was in the mid '90s. I about fell over from shock. They already WERE a bedroom community to Ft. Smith. They just were a stagnant one.

I understand there is some new leadership down there as the old guard has been dying off. I would hope they might take some tips from Durant.

Poteau Oklahoma needed a freeway to Muskogee and Forth Smith way back in the 1980s. However the "City Fathers" and :"The Powers-That-Be " knew that (that would make POTEAU OK into an urban area which is a No-No_Never Gonna Happen!!!

If Oklahoma City become a ( HOT or WOW City ) it could do that 19,000 population increase by itself , but let's wait and see what happens in the future.

Not the city itself, but metro OKC has been growing by an average of 20,040/year since 2010.

It was the NCAA itself that required the change in 2005.

You are for the change, no?

I'm Choctaw and I never had any problem with it. I've talked to members of my family and several other Native friends and I've never heard any of my kin or other folks I know who should really care in the first place say anything but "it's not a big deal."

I understand it may be for some. To each his own.

Having said that, don't go after my Atlanta Braves PC police!
