It's a misnomer, according to my wife who worked for the state Health Department a few years ago (now works for ODMHSAS). "Venereal" is inaccurate because the root of the term implies "love" and there's a whole lot of that not involved in most cases. STD (sexually transmitted disease) is the correct term, or as they sometimes called it, CTMF (Consequence of Too Much Fun).

I had a friend who got a little puppy for his two children. He asked the children what they were going to name the puppy. The children answered, "We're going to call him Edison." "Edison," the friend said? That's a ridiculous name. Well then the kids said, "OK, then we'll call him VD......short for vicious dog, at which point the friend said, "Edison will do."
