Hi there, my husband is applying for a position in Ardmore and I had a few questions about it. If he gets this position, we will be moving from WA state to OK (I'm an Okie originally) and this will be a permanent move, so we want to get this right the first time. I read on another thread started here that Ardmore has turned into a "nasty town with gangs". I have three children and am concerned about crime and how this will inevitably affect the local school system (especially at the high school level). The crime stats here on city-data confirm that there might be some crime issues in Ardmore. We would like to know, from people who live there or have recently lived there, if there is any credence to this statement. If there is a crime problem is it localized? We would really like to buy an older home (early to mid-century) in the historic part of town. How is this area? Anyway...lots of questions. I'll start with these. Thanks !

No, but I would guess some of the gang and drug related trouble in Ardmore would come from out of town, perhaps from Dallas. If so, it's up to the local polilce to do something about it to discourage it.

I don't have specific info on Ardmore, but I'm from Purcell, a little ways up the road. I-35 is a drug corridor. Ardmore is probably the big town between Dallas and OKC. So, I would say it's not unfeasible. However, I don't think it's to the point where you're worrying about drive-bys or anything that extreme. I think you would probably be just fine if you don't live in a sketchy apartment complex in a rough area and teach your kids what to stay away from. You might even find a house outside of town in the country which might help you feel more secure. Anyway, all that to say that I wouldn't be a bit scared to move to Ardmore, but, I don't have kids. Maybe I'd be more paranoid if I did, but I kind of doubt it.

I don't live in Ardmore now, but I was born and grew up there. From friends who still live there, yes, Ardmore is major drug territory. The high school is on the outskirts of town, the NW side of town, in a nice area. I always hear good things about Plainview High School, south of Ardmore High School. I don't know that it's a "nasty" town. I've never heard that, as it's been given the title of one of the All American Cities several times.
There's also a high school east of Ardmore that I went to, called Dickson High School. Much smaller than Ardmore, but, probably not as good. Good luck. I really think that I would live there now had there been ample employment when I graduated and was ready to go out on my own. And, if you see Hess Boulevard, that's named after my FIL.

Granted I'm far removed from the years of attending high school...but I have a friend who attend Plainview School system (graduated in 1994) and loved it. Her parents still live in the area and like it. I got a sense it was more of a school system for those "preppy" like kids.

Is Plainview High School within the Ardmore School District or is it a small town district? What is the downtown area like? Do you, by chance, know if the historic part of town (we like older homes) falls within a good high school district? Would that be for Ardmore High? Anyway...thank you!

Ardmore is a scary place to live. More gangs members than police. I am a security guard in Ardmore and I fear for my life every day. On or off duty. There is a atmosphere that you don't look anyone in the eyes or something bad might happen. Hate it. Moving soon
