I knew the area several decades ago when it was still a town but haven't been back there in a long time. I'm going to be in the area soon and would like to drive through the town for a closer look.

I've seen YouTube videos of people walking through the town and even exploring abandoned houses and buildings. I'm aware of the environmental hazards but I'm curious about the legality. I know the feds bought out the houses and have closed off some areas. But didn't the feds sell the land to the Quapaw indians?

I may just drive around the streets and may or may not get out. I probably wouldn't have the nerve to go into any buildings but was just wondering if many people do this and would there be any danger of being charged with trespassing. Does the highway patrol or sheriff's dept. or Quapaw tribe have jurisdiction there? Or is it just considered an abandoned ghost town?

I have been researching this issue on other internet sites and there are differing opinions so may as well try and get some others.

As a sidenote, I remember taking a date to the Picher auction they used to hold on Saturday nights. Everyone there was real friendly. We were from Columbus Kansas, just down the highway. Later, I dated a woman from Miami Ok, and I used to drive through Picher everytime I visited her. I used to love to look at the chat piles as I drove through. They looked so majestic.

I've read a couple of other threads here about Picher but they are a few years old so thought I would see if there was any newer information.

If you see no trespassing signs, don't ignore them.

The only thing I know about Picher is that one of the guys from Rascal Flatts is from there, the lead guitarist I think.
