I am 44 just connected with my biological father. He and my Great Aunt are working to get my card. I was wondering if there was any cultural or connections to the nations in San Antonio, Texas. I have my biological father who lives in Germany and Great Aunt who is in Georgia. I am more of a hands on learner and would like my son to have the experiences I never did.

You will normally be assigned (enrolled) in a specific band in a tribe. If your father and great aunt are enrolled, perhaps the band has cultural resources. I did not know that I was part Chippewa until I started to do genealogy, and found out that my mothers mother was a mixed indian. I eventually found out my mother was enrolled in the Lake Superior Band, White Earth Chippewa. I became enrolled as well as my two sisters. We travelled up to White Earth one summer for the PowWow, and subscribe to the tribal newsletter. There are also books that have been written about this group and other Chippewa. Not a very pretty story -much suffering and looting of native resources.

For Choctaw info see https://www.choctawnation.com/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choctaw

You might contact the Choctaw nation to find out what ever your questions might be. It would be well worth a trip up to the part of Oklahoma that comprises the Choctaw nation. Beautiful country.

There is also the Mississippi band of Choctaw located in Neshoba county MS that could provide you with info about the Choctaw's ancestral home. A person can also apply for membership in their tribe but you have to be 50% Choctaw to get into their tribe. In the Choctaw nation of Oklahoma if your biological father has a card then you should be good to go. There are no quartile requirements in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. You just have to be related to someone who was on the Dawes Roll.

Here is the Mississippi band:

Getting a membership for you and your son will provide many benefits for you. Although some of these benefits are more easily accessed in Oklahoma, some are available no matter where you live.
