It's worth it. Later, when your daughter is fabulously rich and famous, she will take care of her old man. Maybe she will buy you a place in Gerty.

Now, Schousse, you've met me and my family, were we obnoxious? And we're not exceptions. There are certain sections of the state where the people may have a bit more "attitude", mostly because they're so stressed from the COL, traffic, congestion, etc. But most people in NJ are very nice and friendly.

Synopsis, Hackensack is near the section of the state where you would find more "attitude", so if you can go further south from there (towards central NJ), you'll find things a little more relaxed and the landscape is more like the plains, more flat than the northern part of the state.

As for the Guidos -- please, I've never seen one (in person) in my life. Like Bob said, stay away from Seaside and Belmar and you won't see them either. If you want to go to the beach, head for LBI, there are lots of great beaches there, and no guidos.

I understand your motivation. We moved here for our kids, to give them more of an opportunity to have a home of their own without working four jobs to pay all the taxes. My son is making the same money here in the grounds department at Hobby Lobby that his friends are making in NJ. Scott could actually buy a small condo here if he wished, on what he makes, but his friends in NJ are sharing apartments and still can barely make the rent.

Do they dance the sidestep in OK?

If so, I guess you'll be missing this by leaving.

"Ooh, I love to dance the little sidestep / Now they see me, now they don't / I've come and gone / And ooh, I love to sweep around a wide step....."

You did the right thing for you and your family.

I'm trying to figure out an exit strategy out of NJ myself and where to go from here.

Maybe if everyone leaves New Jersey, I can get a decent job and a place to live that doesn't cost a fortune!

That's not about to happen. For every person who leaves NJ, another immigrant arrives. When I worked for the NJ Division of Taxation, at least one in three callers had a foreign accent. Somedays it seemed like more than that.

Well Synopsis you could look at it this way. This week alone I have been called for three job interviews, I accepted one then another came along a day later. The second one is the one that I would realy like to have, a city worker.
