This Oklahoma forum has been so dead that I thought I would bring up that Stillwater will bribe you with $5000 and free coffee for a year, if you will agree to move there to become a remote worker and buy a house. More at: https://www.makemymove.com/get-paid/stillwater-oklahoma

Stillwater's a lovely town. My parents both grew up there so we often visited my grandparents there, and it's a really nice smallish college town.

Stillwater is kind of fascinating in that as you drive around town you have no clue that about half the town resides in the southwest quadrant of Stillwater that doesn't even really feel like it is "in town".

You drive by that area on Western or on HWY 51 and you have no idea how much development is back in there. Very nice area.

It happened that way because the first developments out there were around the country club which was a bit of a ways out of town back in the day. And the developments ended up bridging the area between town and golf course back toward the town. Gave it a whole different feel than traditional growth where towns just keep expanding outward from the previously developed areas.

Stillwater Creek's flood plain helps explains the separation. If would be costly to raise the flood plain so it could be developed, though a small part of it was raised to build a small strip mall. Bartlesville gives off a similar impression with its flood plain.

In the southwest part of Stillwater, two new subdivisions all together offering 511 lots are currently under construction. To a smaller extent, the northeast part also has residential development taking place. Like the southwest part, the northeast part also had a remarkable amount of development decades ago, like during the 1960s and 1970s. The new Sooner Power Plant between Ponca City and Stillwater helped. Those were the days when Stillwater was trying to turn into a blue collar college town. It succeeded in doing so to some extent. But these days it's not as much of a blue collar town ever since Mercury Marine permanently closed, which had hired up to 1200 workers. What is there now, Asco Aerospace, may only have around 200 workers.

Flood plain solves the mystery. Thanks. And yes the B'ville comparison makes sense now that you mention it.

However the eastern part of B'ville (separated by the flood plain) from downtown doesn't hold a candle to SW Stillwater. And it's also not really hidden away like SW Stillwater.

All I'm saying is for people who go to visit Stillwater thinking about relocating need to make sure they go see SW Stillwater before making any judgements because it will completely change a person's perception of the town.
