I have a relative heading to Ft Sill this summer. Anyone have any knowledge of what the area's like? Any thoughts on cost and availability of houses or apartments? Recreation in the area Thanks? Thanks much.

This is a how many drops of water are in a river question. Ways too broad.

Housing (rental) is more expensive than it should be, in large part due to the transient nature of Army personnel. Housing (ownership) itself is relatively cheap.

There is so much to do here that a big city offers. That's why I go to Wichita Falls or OKC most every weekend. (So, no, there's not much big-city activity here.)

There are loads of recreational activities available, however. Some are sponsored by Fort Sill (such as the Laker Elmer Thomas Recreational Area, or LETRA). And Medicine Park is, when not overrun by OKC and DFW visitors, a hidden gem.

Lawton does do a pretty good job with eateries. Nothing fancy mind you, but there are a some pretty good places and quite a few ethnic places due to the base. I suppose if you are a food snob you might find the ethnic places below par but in this part of the country it's hard to find a lot of those type places outside of major metros.

The bad news is the city is pretty scraggly and ugly and traffic can be pretty bad at times for a town it's size.

Ft Sill is well-known for the artillery units and the artillery training center / ranges. Do residents in many parts of Lawton hear the rumble of artillery at various hours of the day (and night)? The percussion of large caliber cannons can travel for a long distance along open plains, so I was curious how much this might bother some people in Lawton.

I've never lived in Lawton but have had relatives live there. Visited there a time or two when the artillery was active. Sounded like distant thunder.

It's going off right now. And it's something one gets totally used to, just like airliners overhead or highway traffic. It's not as intrusive as it might seem, but the places that would be affected most are the places no one wants to live anyway.

Traffic isn't that bad. It's easy to drive from one end to the other in less than 20 minutes. Especially since the lights are synchronized.

The standard chains are here for eateries {Applebees, Chilis, Texas Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Rib Crib, BWW}, plus a few Korean places, but several have folded since last year, either due to hardships or retirements [Pusan was the best, owners retired]. Not as many local places as I would like, Mexican is lacking, the casinos have a couple of higher-end places but the smoke often drifts into the restaurants.
