I am looking at a job in Muskogee. What are the outdoor opportunities like and how are the summers? I live in AZ so I can deal with heat, but how is the humidity? How are the winters - lots of ice, snow? How do people take to non-Oklahomans? Thank you for reading this!

Why are you moving to Muskogee?

There are a lot of rivers and lakes here, and it is very lush. The summers are hot with high humidity. While I can deal with dry heat, you will find the humid heat a lot to handle. I hope I can handle better than I could years ago when living in Mississippi.

The winters are a lot milder than many places. We have had three snow falls this year with only about 1 to 3 inches of snow each. They each lasted a few days to a week. We had an ice storm this year, which is rare, and it took out the electricity for a week in many areas. It was hard for people to find generators as everyone wanted one. I rather enjoyed it and the snow since it is not severe here as it is in other areas of the country.

Oklahomans are very friendly and will not be unfriendly to you when they learn you are from out-of-state. I know this because I am from California.

Birdz, just from vacationing in eastern OK, I definitely agree with Jessaka. The people there are very friendly and they're genuine. We drove through Muskogee, but I don't know anything about it except that my friend's sis lives there and loves it. AND it is supposed to be a bit hot and humid there a few months of the year.

Red face Is there a better place for us to look?

We are looking very seriously at Muskogee and want to gather all the information we can. As for humidity, well we survived 13 years in Dallas with humidity plus very high temp so we think we know pretty much what to expect. We are just looking for an area that isn't too liberal, has a reasonable cost of living and some change of seasons, plus a releatively easy commute to our granddaughters in Fayetteville, our granddaughters in OKC and our daughters north of Dallas. When she retires they will locate to Arkansas. The northeast corner of OK seems to have almost everything we think we want.

Interesting. I have lived the summers in San Antonio, and I don't recall the humidity, not that there wasn't any, but I lived in the panhandle of Florida and in Mississippi, and I couldn't stand it. One wonders what it will be like here, and I am about to find out. So far the 88 degrees with humidity the other day has not bothered me.

I think you need to take a trip to Muskogee and see if it is a city you would like. There are smaller towns nearby, but if you want a city, then Muskogee seems like a good location to these other towns.

We intend to take more than just one trip, probably at least 3 before deciding. Of course we will gather all the information we can as well. Our granddaugher, who is a senior at the University of Arkansas thinks we should consentrate on the Muskogee area but it seems there are more benefits for senior citizens in AR. Our first trip will be next month. As for humidity, OMG it was terrible in the Dallas area. Much of the summer the temps would hover around 100 degrees and the humidity 80%, plus the summers start in April and continue til late Sept or even mid October.

I have heard the same about benefits in Arkansas being better. For most part, Arkansas is prettier too, but houses cost a little more.

WE have had 88 degrees here in Oklahoma with 78 percent or so humidity. So far that isn't uncomfortable to me. The 100 will be though.

Jessaka, I can feel the heat just from your statements. One year (it was a really hot one) about 10 years ago we spent our anniversary in Hot SPings. It was late August, ungodly hot and humid and I thought we would melt. Of course I could stand to melt a little. I think the most important thing to remember, for all of us, no place is perfect. Arkansas might be better for seniors, but they also have a 9.25% sales tax, that is the highest I have ever heard. There was an article in the Wall Street Journel last week or that is when my hubby cut it out showing overall taxes in Ar the 8th highest in the nation. Of course it depends on what taxes affect you the most. For us, we don't care about the income taxes so much as our income is fixed and not that high, but we do care about taxes on car registration, property and sales. I guess in the next few months we will get it all figured out.

Where in Oklahoma would be too liberal? The college towns?
