Yesterday I had a tree in my front yard, lots of thick leaves. Even this morning it looked okay. I know it was okay, because the guy who cuts grass and 5 boys were with him, and none of them noticed anything wrong. NOW it's stripped bare, all that's left of the leaves are the main rib, and the whole thing looks like some kind of warped cactus! There are some huge [4"-5"] caterpillars on it, like nothing I've ever seen. There aren't any cocoons of any kind, not unless they are at the very top where I can't see them, and they are mostly green with a little black around the eating end.

What ARE these things, and what can I do about them?

What kind of tree? Even the shape of the leaves could help... Any idea what color the caterpillars are?

Silkworms can make pretty short business out of a Mulberry tree!

No idea what kind of tree, though it's shaped sort of like the mulberries I remember from childhood - but it's about 4 times as big. No leaf shape, I didn't look all that closely before, and now there are NONE! The caterpillars are the same shade of green the leaves were, though. I got one nearly in the face, looking for any vestige of leaf on a branch and it waggled it's eyebrows at me. Disconcerting, to say the least. If it's a mulberry, they work very fast, indeed. I might have missed seeing them since I don't see all that well, but there were other people here until around 1 PM and they didn't notice anything wrong.

Last year down here in Texas we had an invasion of silkworms that stripped loads of trees bare. But, they didn't do it overnight, it took days and weeks. They were also evident long before they hatched because of their webbed cocoons all over the tree. It sounds like you have something different.

This site might help.

What's That Bug: More Caterpillars and Pupa

Or if its the pic below, you've got yourself a monarch in the making.

Is the Monarch butterfly native to OK? I haven't seen Monarchs since I left CA many years ago.

Not this, and nothing like any of the ones on that site. If I can find the box with the software for my camera, and if I can download the pix filling it up now, and if I can find more batteries, and if I can find any of the critters left on the tree, I'll try and take some pictures of them.

Awful lot of "if's" there.
