Hi all. I will be moving to OK next month to work at OUHSC. I've heard that Edmond is a good place to live. With my budget I am looking to rent a house in OK and my budget is under $900 a month. I found a house from the internet that's for rent, it's 1800 Godhania. from the map it looks like it's in the north area of Edmond close to Mitchell Park. anyone know if it's a decent neighborhood there? I have a newborn baby and really would like to avoid to college student crowd and want an area relatively quiet and safe. another house i've found is in the Wynn circle section. from the map it looks like it's close to route 77 between edmond and okc. I am flying down there next week but i would like to get a headstart on which location around OKC and Edmond is good. hope someone can help me! thank you!

George

I don't know the OkC area that well Yakiniku but I'm sure someone who is more knowledgeable will come along with some help. If worse comes to worse, PM some of the people that know the area better. Shad8974 seems to know the whole are very well; you might PM that person.

It really involves someones personality to choose between edmond/norman or OKC- edmond/norman are all in OKC metro and are 100-125,000 pop.- so it depends on if you like suburb or cosmo. Pick your poison.

Edmond(suburb) is a great place to live. Very safe. I actually looked at a website for Edmond- I would look it up / I have to say... i was more impressed than i thought i would be. Edmond has grown huge and actually tries to rival OKC for many events laudy da da(they call themselves edmondites and carry an elite attitude towards anything outside of edmond) . Unfortunately they recently lost 'Shakespeare in the Park' which was one of oklahomas premiere classical theater to OKC because of the growing need for the arts Downtown/bricktown/cosmo area. The new venue will be ten times greater- it will be played out on a new outside water stage in Myriad Botanical gardens(close to OU med center, heart of downtown OKC)-this park designed by Pei is one of the most beautiful parks in oklahoma and crystal bridge is one of the best in SW- tiny, tiny central park/sunken lake -but so beautiful/you get lost with amusement. It will be free of course/but this is just one little attraction in DOWNTOWN OKC(which is next to OU med center). Free live theater outside in summertime was great in edmond- but it cant shake a stick at its new location(lol). the reason im telling you this- OKC had bad times in the70s- 90s-everyone moved outside to subs. A major/never seen before revitalization of the city due to MONSTER projects that you just need to look up have drawn everyone back to downtown-google OKC/Bricktown/info about the city. I am a native OKCitian and i cant keep up with all the projects/completed projects that are going on because i live in norman. Just too much going on - i need a study guide now!

Edmond- has UCO-the second or third largest U in OK amongst other smaller private colleges.
OKC- has Oklahoma City University- small private/not intrusive.
Norman of course has OU.
Really all are becoming great areas to live along with all of oklahoma.
The U's are all centralized so no one will be throwing a keg on your lawn.
Meaning you could enjoy all 3 w/o being annoyed by the college crowd- BUT OKC is by far less of a college town- Its a big city/so you dont see it.

Simplify-

OKC- inner city neighborhoods- Mesta Park/Edgemere Park/ Lincoln Terrace/heritage hills/bell isle/crown heights.....all historical homes/restored with lots of tree lined streets and inner city parks are everywhere.
If I were to make a choice it would be in these historical districts. You can find a home with character- cheaper/close to/ almost next to OUmed center/downtown/culture and everything. and still have the luxury of safety.
If you dont like cosmo in OKC- Quail Creek(nice country club) i lived there for 8 yrs and many other NEWER developments are north of central OKC. Pretty safe for now- but honestly the crime in some areas are moving in that direction fast. OKC is so spread out. I would feel safer walking around Downtown and inner areas- because a lot has changed (extracting all the bad guys!). plus it is close to Omniplex considered the smithsonian of the SW/OKC zoo(oldest in SW and is still considered the best in the SW) and remington race track and casino(4 star). So there is something for adults and children.

Edmond- long commute to OUMED- we have a great infrastructure highway but as a city they did not expect the enormous growth towards edmond- so during rush hour it will feel like dallas- because they are having to widen broadway ext. which goes into edmond. But as mentioned/a great place to live.Museums lots to do. But again canyt shake a stick to what OKC brings.

Norman- is actually a little closer and easier to commute/although some might disagree. Norman is very pretty like edmond- lots of trees/parks/ great museums-has almost as many as OKC. But OKCs museums are bigger. Norman is a baby friendly town. Many live and enjoy w/o college crazy atmosphere- liberal town with a lot of personality- quiet niches in many parts.

good luck- hope it wasnt to confusing- if you need specifics ask.

great! that's good info to know. where can i find listing for houses in the historical areas? My boss mentioned to me about it and I drove pass by it once. they seem to be nice and old.. I lived in an old apartment before and it was all fine but the weak water pressure really wasn't very nice. I hope they are not like that. Also I have a pet too, so I am not sure if those properties would allow pets. I've been looking over property management websites on the internet and found some places that matched my budget, but I suppose I should go there my self to check out the areas.
