Are they permitted to be built anywhere in Oklahoma? Anyone know anything? I am leaving Oklahoma for a few years to get some things in order, but hubby and I plan to move back, buy a couple acres of land and build our dream container home. We're thinking Broken Arrow or Owasso. Somewhere near to Tulsa, but not in Tulsa.

I would forget about Owasso or BA and go more rural where there are no building codes. Look west of Tulsa.

Both Owasso and BA have strict building codes. So does Rogers County. Maybe Osage or Pawnee or Okmulgee would work for you.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a shipping container home? I could probably look it up but I am too lazy.

It is a shipping container that has been turned into a house.

Ok, thanks I thought it might just be a brand name. I went ahead and looked them up, quite interesting I must say.

Kinda like a Big Rig Trailer with no tires. Maybe alittle bigger.

I've seen some "Industrial Lofts" for rent that look like shipping containers with particle board interior walls. The lofts were expensive too even though they looked cheaper then the average single wide.

However, there are some really nice ones too. I guess it just depends on who puts it together.

Thanks for all of the replies yall! Hubby and I are really excited about this. Here are a few videos as well as photos of what we're looking at

ZeroCabin™ Shipping Container Bunkhouses, Container Homes , Portable Container Buildings, Pre-fab Mining Housing, Prefab Crew Cabins, Crew Homes and Cabins, Pre-fab, eco-friendly housing

The wonderful thing about these are that they are affordable, very very strong (will endure all types of tornados and earthquakes), sturdy, stackable and completely customizable! We've got a neat design for ours and just want to find the best place for it.

Default Shipping Container Homes & Permits

I am building a 3000 sq. ft house out of 5 8' X 8'6" X 40 containers and 1 8' X 8'6" X 20' container. I am in rule Texas, no zoning, no deed restrictions but I am in Cameron County along the coast. It has taken me a year to get the necessary permits. Mostly because the building inspectors don't know how to run the proper calculations. I am a Welding Engineer so I have guided them along.

The American Bureau of Shipping has the design criteria for the containers and they are very rigious. ISBU has a nice general drawing of a container.

I am going to use Ceramic Insulation inside and out along with foam and stucco on the outside.
