We are looking at a possible job opportunity in Sayre,OK. What can anyone tell us? We have a 5 year old, from what I have read the schools seem fairly decent, but how are they to outsiders? We are originally from CA, then moved to Oregon and now currently in Texas, jobs are always so hard to find!
Is Sayre considered high desert? Whats the humidity like there?
Weather in General, hot and dry, humid, lots of rain, no rain, snow?

Any local Pow-Wows?
Fsihing? Bowhunting?

I noticed basic places there to eat/shop, do you go to Elk City for more shopping, is there a Target or Kmart?

What about Flying W, is it still running good? Has anyone ever worked there, stayed there, can you tell me about it?

Thanks so much!

It's right on the edge of the Staked Plains. The Texas panhandle is extremely flat and as you enter into OK, you will start seeing the red dirt. It's pretty isolated. I know the humidity in Amarillo area is a lot nicer than Oklahoma. But I think you will be with the rest of us here in the sweat zone.

As far as native cultural events, you are right on the edge of the Cheyenne and Arapaho, and Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache areas, with tons of "intertribals" during the summer months.

redbird- Thank you for that information. Why do they call it the staked plains? Bummer on the humidity, I was hoping a little lower, we are in central Texas currently gets yucky as ya' know. I will keep my eyes out for the cultural events!

I lived in that area for a two year period. It's not really that isolated with the freeway coming through, and the population of that area is more than you would think when you add up Elk City, Sayre, Clinton and Cordell,

Sayre is a sleepy little town. There isn't much there except the courthouse.

Amenity wise you would be much better off in Elk City. School wise your choices besides Elk and Sayre would be Merritt and closer to the ranch Cheyenne. Cheyenne is a good small school but the town is further off the beaten path.

I was not from that area and was from the OKC metro but I didn't mind it out there at all.

The terrain varies out there. Mostly it is flat to rolling although there are a few tree belts south of Sayre and the area to the north in Roger Mills county is rugged and has a lot of bluffs, mesas and the antelope hills are up there.

I stayed at the Flying W Guest Ranch this past fall as a guest and found it to be the best place I have ever stayed. I have traveled around the US and all over the world my whole life and have stayed at A LOT of places. I had never been to Oklahoma before and the people on the ranch made me feel like I belonged there. They will welcome you with open arms and will give you hospitality like you don't get anywhere else. They have a lot to see and do on the ranch. I only had time for a short visit but intend to go back for a longer visit.

Good luck with your move!

Betsy, I am glad you stayed in the fall before all the changes happened to the ranch. It is now a place I would WARN people to stay away from! They have new cabins and they are all daisy chained together electrically, very dangerous!! They did this to cut costs, it has changed hands a couple of times and sadly is not going to be what all expected, furthermore be caferful of their horses if you take a ride and watch the prices for what you get. Cabins currently don't have much in the way of utnesils, can openers, the heat and air is sluggish due to the daisy chaining..just a heads up to all! Sassys is a great place to eat though I will give it that!

Sage44, can you tell me about your comments about the Ranch? We are thinking of going, but I was wondering why you warn people away. Their prices compared to other ranches actually seemed rather affordable...what will I not be getting there that I would get somewhere else? Also, can you explain the warning about the horses? Have you stayed there recently? Just looking for some info before we go, I don't want my family to be disappointed! Thanks!

Sorry to get back to you so late. We worked out there for almost 2 months. Their horse "trainer" beats the horses, which at the time there wasn't a one under 25, the horses are older and some under nourished. They are suppose to get new ones though.
The training on these horses is questionable, the trainer wouldn't even get on and ride them, too scared.

They are very dis-organised and are not consistanly available to needs of their guests, there Arcade they boast about has 2 working games last we knew.

The cabins, well they are being hooked together illegally and have been reported and they are under investigation.
They can cause fire, not good to guest relations.
So yes we stayed there, actually lived on site and worked onsite.
Run under different circumstances it would be a great thing, but the current folks running it want it to be a hunters playground mostly (for friends, so tell the guests during hunting season they can't come)..anyway let me know if you went. If you did I hope you were treated well.
