I have a problem. I can't find very many negatives(for us that is) about Norman or the surrounding towns. Coming from Memphis(outside suburb actually), this is making it hard for me to decide where to live. Here, it wasn't too hard to decide. We knew what areas were decent and which weren't. We actually have really bad areas of town..(most of the city limits LOL). Do you guys have bad parts?? My husband asked his future coworkers and they actually had to think about it. That makes me think that there really aren't any. Is that possible?? Seems too good to be true. LOL

We have dreamed of having a house on around an acre but still have neighbors around us. We had planned to eventually move to a town like that near here(but 45min. from Memphis) some day. You guys have several of these areas and not much of a commute to Norman. I need some input. We are in our 30's with two elementary aged children. We are going to rent for a year or two, bit I would like to find a place where our kids can go to school and we won't have to switch schools in a couple of years. We are looking at Purcell, Washington, Blanchard...places with one school.

You don't know how excited I am about the idea of my kids going to ONE school for each level of their school years. We have never lived in a small town before, but I am looking forward to the change.

I dont live in Norman but many of my coworkers and associates do. The biggest complaint I hear is the traffic is terrible on OU home game days. Also, in the short term, there is a ton of construction going on I-35 so depending on where you work, the commute might be longer. Probably not bad considering Memphis traffic though.

Also, even though you are considering renting, you could still work with a realtor. They could give you the low down on the areas and schools as well.

Noble or Purcell would be my choices unless you want a smaller school than that. Then you have Blanchard and Washington.

There is a school about 15 minutes east of Norman called Little Axe which is in some real pretty country around Lake Thunderbird. It really isn't a town but rather a small community centered around the school and an IGA grocery store and the lake.

I'd still go with Noble or Purcell but there are some real nice homes in Blanchard.

Noble and purcell would be good places to consider for what you're looking for. Though purcell starts to get a little further. Noble is really close though to Norman and not a bad drive at all.

There are some parts of town that are a little older and maybe not quite as nice and maybe have a few more incidents but overall Norman is a very safe city. You would probably be looking more though in the surrounding areas based on what you're describing for land preferences and such. You can find things on the outside edge of norman going towards Lake Thunderbird that is exactly kind of what you're looking for. A coworker of mine lives in Little Axe and grew up there and she obviously likes it a lot.

The suggestion of a real estate agent might be good even if you're not planning to buy right away. This would also give you a good contact for when you are ready to buy. I have a good friend (realtor) who works the Norman area a lot who I could put you in touch with. She is incredibly patient and friendly and I'm sure would be happy to help you. Don't think you need it, but she's also bilingual (spanish/english). If you're interested, send me a PM and I'll send her contact information to you.

CEHR, Sorry about that. Someone had posted a hate filled message about the OK in general and everyone in it. Lots of ugliness. After I posted my response, I guess the original message was deleted by the moderator.
