I got an offer at the VA in Omaha. I don't even know where that is. What is life like in Omaha??

I am from fla and I often thought Omaha is middle America. Rural Surburbs and I often think of Timothy McVeigh--I am not sure if he was or was not from Omaha. But I think small town life. Am I mistaken?? Large farms and country town living????

Tell me what life is like in Omaha, Ne.

Thank you for your input

Lol, wow. I knew alot of people on the coasts were sheltered, but this is out of control. Timothy McVeigh...really?

Omaha is over twice the size (by area) and has a larger population than Miami. Does that answer your question on "farms" and "country town living"?

Omaha is a typical midsize city with all of the amenities of a midsize city. The metro area is about 8-900,000. Omaha does not feel rural at all, it's a fantastic city with fantastic people and it offers an excellent quality of life.

You can use the "Birds Eye" view in Bing Maps, or Street View in Google Maps, to get a bit of a virtual tour of Omaha. You can do this for the VA hospital as well. Just use "42nd and Center" instead of their 4101 Woolworth Avenue address as that will put you right over the major intersection and Bing is better about recognizing that. As you'll see, that's a pretty urban area.

Historical Fact: That large building on the southeast corner of 42nd and Center is the old Center Mall. It's pretty much just office space now, but it is semi-officially the first indoor mall built in America.

I knew it's mostly office space now but did they shut down the bowling alley at the Center Mall too? I vaguely remember going there for my 7th birthday party back in 1991.

Bowling alley is gone. Probably been gone for almost 10 years now. I was only in there once though, and that had to be circa 1995.

Here is a free history lesson: Timothy McVeigh is usually associated with Oklahoma because he bombed a building in Oklahoma City. Oh, and no, Timothy McVeigh is not from Omaha - he is from New York. So now, whenever you think of New York, you can think of Timothy McVeigh.

Here are a couple pages I found talking about the Center Mall.

Malls of America - Vintage photos of lost Shopping Malls of the '50s, '60s & '70s

Discretion Advised (You can ignore the "discretion" warning if you get it. I found nothing offensive posted on this page).
