Hello,

I am a new student in UNMC. I have not been to Nebraska. Unfortunately, I will not be able to come visit and look for apartments personally, since I live in Cleveland OH and will have to work till the day I move fully to Nebraska. So I will be having to do the search, application, deposit, online and through the phone. So any help from anyone will be so deeply appreciated.

As a new graduate student, it may be smart to stay relatively close to the UNMC medical center. I have a car, so a longer commute would be no problem at all, if it means a nicer, safer place to live. So whatever the nicest neighborhood and apartment complex are, I would not mind if it takes a longer commute.

I live with my younger sister, who is in high school. I'm looking for a 2 bedroom apartment, that is preferably gated with security and has in suite laundry and dryer, and is relatively new and modern. It's very important for me that the apartment area is in a good school district.

From some online search, I came across Urban Village and Ontario Place Apts. Also, I found the Highclere apts.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding neighborhoods, apartments, or schools, I would be so grateful.

Well what are you looking to pay? And are there any schools that have caught your eye for your sister?

Really, anything close to Dodge Street would be good, since UNMC is more or less right off of there. The more affordable ones would be probably west of 72nd Street.

Omaha Apartments - Rent Apartments in Omaha, NE

The link above would be a good place to start.

From the experience I have had at a friend's apartment, I would avoid the ones off of 72nd and Spring Street. They are decent priced, but you have a communal washer and dryer and they are terrible.

As for a safe place in town, it's actually harder to find a place that is blatantly unsafe than you would think. Some parts are better than others but Omaha is pretty good when it comes to that. Just avoid the most northeast part of the city

Below is a crime map for the last week or so of various criminal activities across the city sorted by things like vandalism, car theft, robbery, etc. It looks overwhelming, but from someone who lives here, it is actually not bad.

CrimeMapping.com - National Map

Hope this helps!

Yes, my price range is from 800 to 1000 roughly. I heard good things about the Westside High School and the Central Omaha High school.

For 800-1000 you might as well rent a house. Most apartments are in the 600-700 range. We rented a 1400? sq foot house in mid town for 750 a month. It was just off of 84th and dodge.

Hi!
But where would I look for a house? I feel like it might be more difficult to research the right homes. What companies might have reliable homes with maintenance and all for rent? I also want something very secured and gated since I will be living with my younger sister. Coming from Cleveland, I might have gotten too protective or cautious.
Thank you all for your help and input! It means a lot and its so kind of you.

The only gated communities I am aware of in Omaha are out west and usually aren't the renting type. I could [and probably am] wrong though.

Oh I'm sure you're very right. Thank you for your reply! It seems like the West has more of a suburban, more space for gates and stuff, situation.

Honestly you wont need gated in Omaha as long as you dont live in North/South O where the typical car break-ins seem to occur sometimes. Omaha is a pretty safe place to live. As far as how to find them, look for real estate companies, many of them rent houses. IE: Century 21 Just dont use PJ Morgan real estate, they're pretty crappy. I've also had luck finding places on Zillow for rent too.

In my 26 years living in Omaha, I never had issues with anyone breaking into my house/car or trying to hurt us.
