An Omaha-based developer of Internet-based entertainment technology is working to change the hotel-stay experience.

The system developed by Tivus will bring “smart features” like social networking websites, access to streaming Netflix films and hotel room climate control to the television screen.

During hotel stays, guests can browse the Internet on Tivus-powered units; play video games; rent an unlimited number of movies for free; access 140 TV channels that can be customized for guests visiting from other countries; and print documents on an in-room printer.

For tech-savvy travelers, or those wanting the same comforts they’re afforded in their own homes, it’s a one-stop shop, said the company’s top executive.

“This is more than just TV,” said Tivus chief executive Shiva Prakash. “At the end of the day, what we want to offer the hotels is an opportunity to engage the guest.”

Prakash, who came to the United States from India in 1997, has lived in Omaha for eight years, working at ConAgra Foods Inc. as a software engineer before branching off and laying the groundwork for what would become Tivus.

That venture began in 2000, as Prime Link Systems, a company focusing primarily on bringing wireless Internet access to hotels.
