I would not move East of 72 street and North of Maple street. You can map all of theses areas out. District 66 has nice homes and a great school district. There are also towns on the outskirts of Omaha. 20 minutes away is the town of Blair, Nebraska. Very nice community. We live in the Benson area, east of 52 street. The only reason we stay here, is due to the fact ,our children attend a private school a block away and we have two large protective dogs.. Otherwise, we do not let our children ride their bikes more than 5 houses and we do not go forfamily walks at night around here. So we live in this neighborhood, but most of the time we use other areas for shopping, going to parks, etc. This neighborhood would be North of Dodge street. Dodge is the divider of the city for the North and South. Dundee is nice, but can be costly.

mia brings up a very good point. Dundee is a nice neighborhood, but just a few blocks to the north -- it's a VERY different story. Will Dundee retain the level of safeness that it currently is clinging to? Say in 5 years? 10 years? That remains to be seen. If you don't want to take that gamble - Old-towne Blair would give you a similar feel with it's large older homes and lots of trees. --plus a nice buffer far far away from big city problems. The commute from Blair to Downtown or Midtown O via highway would not be that bad on most days -perhaps even shorter than most commutes for people who live in larger cities. ----If you can afford to just "stay home" on those handfull of winter storm days that would make a highway commute treacherous --they maybe Blair or a similar outlying community would be the way to go. Blair is probobly the closest thing to "MAYBERRY" that you would find anywhere in the U.S.A. these days!!!

Alot might depend on where the job will be located or what other social opportunities you want. If you have ideas around that it might bring forth other recommendations as well.

All of Omaha east of 72nd street isn't to be looked over. That's where most of the people in the city live. Hundreds of thousands of people manage to get along every day without having to have two dogs walk your kids to school. That's one of the most paranoid things I've ever heard. Benson is actually a nice area. They have their own Downtown area on Maple Street that is becoming a very popular destination in the city like the Old Market.

North of Dundee doesn't turn into a war zone. I lived around 60th and Ames of and on for a few years and visited my best friend in Dundee alot. I was in the area, that alledgedly gets bad, quite often and never had any problems or felt unsafe. The area doesn't even LOOK bad.

I know you will probably get more responses from people telling you to not live in the city. There are alot of suburban minded people in here who are ignorant at best of what it's actually like to live in Omaha. It's much easier for commutes because most places in Omaha are closer to the interstate than the farther out suburban areas. Traffic is getting bad out there. When I used to drive I would always hear my western friends gripe about traffic. Living in the city (not to far from Benson) I never ran into the tie-ups I had heard about.

Default moving from Tennessee to Omah

Hey everyone.....I notice some messages regarding relocations and I too need some info. My husband and I are considering a relocation package with his job to Omaha. Can anyone tell me some names of subdivisions or communities where I can do a real estate search. My husband and I are in our mid 40's and we currently live in a small subdivision....very quiet, small town but within 30 minutes of Knoxville. We are looking for something up to $250,000 in a nice area. Also, I would like some feeback on the winter months, such as how much snow do you get? And last, what about tornadoes.....I have heard that Omaha is part of Tornado alley and that scares me.

Thanks for any feedback.

Try Papillion. CNN/Money Magazine just named it the 6th best place to live in the nation. No other town or city in Nebraska was listed.

Don't worry about tornadoes. They are so hit/miss that even if one is in the area I tend not to worry. Of any potential natural disaster its the one I would first choose to live around if you had to pick one.
