New building going up in Old Market - Omaha.com

Its good to see new construction projects again, especially ones that will fill in parking lots. Between this project, the new Hyatt Place, and the other apartment project down on 14th and Leavenworth, the Old Market will have quite a few more people to serve. Hopefully we can keep this up, and have it spread to NoDo.

One day downtown will get a supermarket. Simply has to happen. Patrick's and Cubby's are simply too expensive and cater too much to the organic movement. Not to mention they are small and have little selection.

If you google "Omaha grocery stores" and just look around it is amazing how underserved the area truly is. The closest full on grocery store is the Hy-Vee in CB. The closest in Omaha is probably the No Frills on Saddle Creek. Pathetic.

You guys want a large selection and low prices.
But just the land cost to put store on throws off the business plan as not feasible.

Land prices are not that high in Omaha and I don't think anyone expects a supermarket in the heart of downtown. But I find it crazy that if you live in the densest part of the city you have to drive further to get to a decent grocery store than the majority of suburban residents do.

Then I guess NYC has no Large grocery stores then.

There are plenty of places in downtown proper to place a supermarket. With lower land values than in many major cities that still manage to have them in their downtown.

New York actually has a local chain, D'Agostino's. No Wal-Mart, and only 1 Target in Manhattan,
