Hey everyone!

My wife and I are moving to Omaha. We have been looking at homes but haven't hit anything yet. My wife starts work in early March, so we need to find some short term housing. I could use some good leads on places that offer short-term leases at a minimum of 30 days (just enough to close, maybe more if needed). I want to find something decent, but everything I am seeing is running upwards of $1500+ a month. I can spend some cash if needed, but would like to keep my expenses somewhere around 600-700, no more than 800. We will probably have our family ship out our pet after the home buying process ends. Thoughts or ideas?

Try VRBO.com and look for weekly or monthly rentals.

Thanks but monthly rates seem to be in the 3k range. Ouch!

Contact Landmark Group.

Because they don't do stellar upkeep and maintenance, I'm not a huge fan. However, they manage properties all over Omaha, in a lot of price ranges, and everything from condos to apartments to single family houses.

What's likely to happen is you'll either be in a 6-month or 1-year lease, and you'll have to break that lease. When you break the lease, you're penalized one-month's rent. It's not ideal, but it's probably your best option, because month-to-month rent is hard to come by, and outrageously priced.

What part of town are you wanting to rent in?

Honestly the part of town isn't a huge concern since its only one month probably. As long as it's semi decent I'm fine. Doing the one month then break the lease can definitely add up. If I'm not mistaken, you also lose your deposit...

Yes, it's horribly inefficient to break a lease. You'd be better off getting the $3,000 place and living it up for a month.

You don't necessarily lose your deposit. In fact, my son & his wife did that just last year, when they bought a house. They paid a 1 month penalty, and got their full deposit back.

They were paying $600 per month for their apartment in midtown. If you simply do the math, you can see how expensive it would be to waste $3,000 for one month's rent. You'd be better off staying at an Extended Stay Hotel, which are available for $60 per day. ValuePlace rents rooms for less than $250 per week.

I don't know anything about the neighborhood, but maybe this would work?

I will look into Landmark. I was talking with Richdale, primarily their Kensington Woods. a 30-day lease is $905 with a pet then the down payment. I feel like that is steep but a much better option then breaking the lease. The $3000 came from some corporate housing options, definitely not what I need, but I do appreciate the unwelcome sarcasm MountainMen. We are eyeing Craigslist for people who may be willing to rent out. I mean, it's really up in the air, but something like what we can do with Richdale is what we are looking for. I am just concerned because I was reading about issues with crime over there.

So my to-do is to contact Landmark. Savannah Suites is another option for us. Anyone here know much on their quality?

Not sure how you take that as sarcasm, but I was one of the few people helping you. Now you have one less person helping you. Enjoy your time in Omaha.
