Less than two years after the Nighthawks ceased operations, it’s possible that professional football could be ready to fly again in Omaha.

Roger Dixon confirmed to The World-Herald on Tuesday that the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority has “exchanged documents” with officials from the FXFL about potentially bringing a team back to TD Ameritrade Park. He said ownership of any Omaha franchise, local or otherwise, has not been part of discussions.

It is believed that the FXFL — the Fall Experimental Football League — plans to begin play in 2014.

Dixon said “nothing is firm” at this point, but the MECA president and CEO said the brief success of the Nighthawks makes the return of football to TD Ameritrade at least an intriguing prospect.

It's official. Omaha will have a team, but will not revive the Nighthawks.

Hope it works out. We need to use the stadium more often.
