I need help finding an apartment or condo somewhere in Omaha due to my job. I will be working mostly from home, but will have to take out of state flights on occasion. I am only finding old posts about where to live and nothing really to compare Portland, Oregon to Omaha.

Wants:

1. safe...as in you can walk home late at night (single male)
2. suburbs/urban area
3. I would like malls, restaurants, gym (24 hour fitness) close by walking would be cool, but a short 5-10 drive isn't out of the question.

If there are people that have lived in NW Portland/Beaverton/Hillsboro area that is what I am looking for in Omaha?

I don't know if there are more "liberal" areas in Omaha than others?

Any info would be great!

Thanks

Omaha is nowhere near as densely developed or walkable as Portland. However, the condo development at Midtown Crossing might suit your needs; it has a lot of shops and restaurants within walking distance, as well as a gym. You can drive from one end of Omaha to another in 30 minutes, so if a 5-10 minutes drive isn't out of the question, you could really locate almost anywhere in the city and have quick access to everything you really want.

Look into Benson, Dundee, Midtown, Old Market and some improving areas like Blackstone and Park Ave.

The more you go west the less liberal it gets. Everything close to Dodge is safe no matter where in the city. If you are close to Dodge, east of Westroads you can survive w/o car because of the only good bus line in Omaha, bus 2. Midtown Crossing is IMHO way too expensive, but still can be affordable.

Omaha is very different from Portland, but if I were you, I'd look downtown at the higher end condos (Riverfront, jLofts, or Brandeis) and see if anybody is renting theirs out. Same for the townhouses around the edge of downtown (by the walking bridge, SOMA, Little Italy).

Thanks everyone, very helpful info. I picked a place in downtown NE. Hopefully that was a good move.

Downtown is too expensive and has no shopping or good groceries around. I'd rather choose midtown.

Patrick's Market and Cubby's both have groceries. Same level as anything in Midtown. In terms of shopping neither Downtown or Midtown really has sustainable clothing options. Downtown does have Urban Outfitters and a few other boutique places in the Old Market. Downtown has better music, food and bar options IMO.
