I always hear Peyton Manning yelling that "Omaha! Omaha!", and I'm curious to visit Omaha. I mean, sounds like Peyton likes it a lot, even give its name to a play call lol... Just kidding, sorry guys. Here's the real thread:
Anyway, I'm really going to Omaha in January, but not for Peyton Manning or football... Maybe I'll receive a job offer from a company there, and I want to visit before to make my decision in moving in or not. So, what you guys have to say about Omaha? Is it a nice place place to live?

Well, I like the place.

Omaha's a mid-sized city with a fun downtown area, several very nice museums and cultural attractions, a minor league baseball team, a fabulous zoo, and good connections by road, rail, and air to the rest of the country. Plenty of land means the city tends to sprawl, and public transportation's not so good - but on the flip side of things, plenty of room to build means our housing costs are low compared to many parts of the country. To me, the worst part of living here is definitely the weather: cold winters (sometimes with plenty of snow), horrible thunderstorms in the spring and early summer, and hot, muggy summers. Also, it's a long way to get to a larger city. The closest, Kansas City, doesn't have much more to offer than Omaha does (IMHO). It's a half-day's drive to St. Louis or Minneapolis, and a full day's drive to Chicago or Denver.

So, what things to you like to do, and what are you looking for in your new home? More specifics will help us tell you if we think Omaha will be a good fit for you.

I personally loved Omaha, and I ended up moving away before it really started to take off.

I am in my late 30's and I like it here. As mentioned previously, the biggest drawback is the weather. But with the not-so-great weather are positives such as low cost of living. There are abundant job opportunities, plenty of sporting events, great restaurants, a great music scene, some pretty good museums, and the performing arts scene is good. Being born-and-raised in Omaha, I often thought/day dreamed about moving to a bigger city when I was younger but over the years, I have grown to love this city and I think I would miss it if/when I do move. In the event that I do move away, I envision myself coming back at some point.

I have a question about the climate. In the summer, is it really that humid or just a little moisture in the air?

It is quite humid overall. You have to go out to North Platte on westward to truly lose a good chunk of the humidity.

When you travel from West to East, you feel a physical change as you get into Nebraska. It's a very heavy, humid air.

This map is also a good representation of the transition of climate between the more humid eastern sections and the more semi-arid western sections. Draw a line from Cherry County (Valentine) down through Lincoln County (North Platte), and that is where average precipitation and humidity values fall off quite a bit- continuing westward from there.
