There is public transportation (bus service) only. And it doesn't cover all of the city areas, so you need to be aware of locations you need to visit, work or live in.

Generally speaking, living without a car is easier the closer you are to the urban core (Downtown & Midtown).

You're almost certainly going to want a car eventually. You may not need to drive it every day, but there are many parts of the city which are not accessible by public transportation, and which you'll probably want to go to at least occasionally.

DT and a couple main streets outside of DT have meters, the neighborhoods are free street parking.

Take it from a car free person, you don't need a car to get around omaha. Get at least a folding bike to take with you on the bus, and no part of the city is off limits. Otherwise, walking is always an option. I have walked from my home near Bellevue to my work in downtown Omaha many times. Takes a while, about 90 minutes, but is doable. By bike it's about a 25-30 min commute and by bus it's about 35-40 min (after a 15-20 min walk to the bus stop).

Those who say you need a car have never really tried going without.

I myself get around mostly by bicycle, with perhaps 10% of trips being by foot and less than 1% by bus. I use to get around mostly by bus, till they killed the #17 route. Now it's almost a 1.6km walk to the nearest stop.

It's much, much easier in the summer. Now is a great time to give it a try and see if it works. If not, you have 3-4 months to find a car before the cold north winds come.

You can always use uber as a back up as well. Rates are relatively low during the week (non party/nightlife times).

I've gotten rates for as low as $10 for ~5-7 miles.
