Omaha's smaller than it looks, when it comes to culture/entertainment and getting around in general. West of 72nd street is mostly suburbia; there's a little out that way, but not much. And from 72nd Street, you're only a 15-20 minute drive east to downtown, and 15-20 minutes from western Omaha/Elkhorn. So pretty much any of the locations iamjacobm suggested have you in a very central part of town, with quick access to almost everything.

As for live music, also check out the Slowdown. It's on 14th Street just south of Cass, right by Filmstreams.

Benson is the best spot for live music. There are a couple other venues scattered around, but Benson is the main area.

As it was mentioned Omaha isn't really all that big. If you live east of 72nd you can get to any of the hip areas in less than 10 mins by car. An up and coming neighborhood called Blackstone is pretty much smack dab in the middle of all the best areas. I live in that neighborhood and like it a lot, super easy to get to Benson or Downtown or Aksarben.

Also be aware of South 24th Street. It is a fantastic ethnic enclave that is largely populated by Latin Americans and immigrants. Great food and unique area for Omaha.

assuming Dundee Theatre is open again soon.

I just time traveled to the year 2052,

and Dundee Theatre I still see they have it under construction.

(sarcasm and probably some truth on how long of a wait we have, considering how long already it been under construction)

Dundee Theater was donated to Filmsreams, and Filmstreams is planning to have it reopened by 2018.
