Default Moving to Omaha

Hello, I am currently looking at a place to rent an apartment in Omaha. And I have been told to be careful of which part of Omaha I should move to. So I was wondering which would be the safest place to look for an apartment. I have found a few in South Central Omaha, is that a relevantly safe area? I am going to Metropolitan Community College and my campus is in South Omaha, but I've been told not to live there, However I do want something that is relevantly close so it makes for an easier drive.

Are there any specific areas that are "bad"? high crime, high violence, high drug? I've combed through this forum a bit and haven't really heard a strong downside to omaha. And is there a place to get a good cheesesteak? lol. it took almost 5 years to find one in charlotte. Any info you can give would be great!

Nuff Said.

South Omaha as a whole is pretty safe, but there are some bad pockets here and there. I'm sure there are many apartment complexes close to the school that are fine. Just drive by and check them out before hand. You also might consider contacting the school and seeing if they recommend any housing options.

I bought a house in Bemis park 8 years ago and have never had any problems outside of what would be normal in the central part of any city. Safety is relative. When I lived in Tampa, FL, the crime rate in my nice neighborhood was much higher than where I live now but bemis park is considered to be in a bad part of Omaha. If you are moving to a north Omaha neighborhood from Bronx, NY or San Francisco, CA, most north Omaha neighborhoods would be a sunny cakewalk of a happy life compared to what you became accustomed to in either of the cities I listed. It's all relative.

North Omaha is a sunny cakewalk compared to San Francisco? Really? Have you ever been there?

You may want to stay away from the South Omaha Campus area because of thebeef plant. That smell can carry, and you will smell it on campus a lot. (I useto tutor there on occasion and almost always smell it when walking across theparking lot.) I am sure you get use to it with time, but I would prefer to livesomewhere where you don’t have to “get used to the bad smell”.
