I was surprised when I went to the NWS site this afternoon to see maps showing Omaha receiving 5-7 inches of snow last night into this morning with North Platte receiving 17 inches! This is one crazy weather pattern for early October

I can't remember the year... 10-15 years ago Halloween was canceled due to an ice storm. I remember having to wait until the next weekend to go trick-or-treating.

My daughter snapped this picture of the front of our house this afternoon.

Gorgeous snow, but I'm not thrilled to see it on October 10th!

I had planned on riding the motorcycle to the car wash. . . until I looked out the window this morning.

I actually saw a guy riding his motorcycle late this afternoon.

Mine remains in the garage, though I certainly hope to have some more riding time this year!

Odd for recent years, but not historically. I'm 42 and have a birthday the 1st week of October. I remember a little snow here and there on a handfull of my birthdays. This one was a surprise, though.

Very true.

I still remember waking up to a winter wonderland in Omaha on my 21st birthday in early October 1970. I miss the Omaha winters.

You should have been here in Oct 1997! That storm closed the city down for weeks.

HappyatCCC is right. It was late October '97 as I was visiting my friend who owns Kanesville Kollectibles in Council Bluffs. It snowed a foot and a half on Sunday morning. I didn't get out to leave to visit friends in Kansas City till Tuesday. I've been through Omaha/Council Bluffs many times and I NEVER have seen a storm closely resembling that one in that area since!

I'm originally from Buffalo and, as a kid, lived in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Henrietta, New York. Growing up there in the 50s and 60s, storms like this were in the "so what else is new?" category. We had them all the time and I always enjoyed them.

This one sounds like it must have been exceptionally wet, heavy snow or maybe started with ice to cause all those breaking trees. Power outages are always a major challenge, but other than that I would have enjoyed it.

Thanks for the links. Pictures are the only way I ever get to see snow any more and it brings back fond memories of my "real" life back East.
