OPS Officials Say "No Zeros" Policy Is Working

btw:

OPS board members Kersten Borer of District 10 and Nancy Huston of District 4 and Sandra Jensen of District 12

are up for re-election in 2012 (not a fan of all them and hope folks run against them)

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard... teach a lesson that if you decide to not show up for work you get 50% of your paycheck.

I was a D- student in high school. I was lazy and didn't want to work. If you'd have told me I'd get 50% for doing nothing, that's what I'd have done.

Since then, btw, I've gone on to get 2 degrees....I just wish I'd have buckled down and actually gotten grades so I could get a scholarship.

dave you forget it is ops, where you have a school board, the OPS board who as well as some teachers in OPS are more intrested in power and money than giving a crap about giving the children the best education they can.

I btw hope either Roger Garcia or Juliana V. Garza wins the race for Omaha Public Schools - Subdistrict 07 this fall

and folks like Sandra Kostos Jensen and Nancy Huston and Kersten Borer and Mary Ellen Drickey
(who are up for re-election in 2012 and need to be given in 2012, the boot like Mona McGregor is being given this year
)

(hint, hint to folks who are in OPS board districts 4 and 8 and 10 and 12 who are up for election in 2012)

that is why the ops system is in a mess.

cause among other reasons we have a corrupt ops board who only cares about holding onto power and influence than giving the children the best education they can.

calvinst, I was a c minus student and I think these kids and this "No Zeros" Policy stuff is a joke

it is just laziness. this is like kids recieving trophies just for being on a sports team and being terrible at sports.

I am ashamed of the Omaha Public Schools system and it's school board for this.

This topic was discussed on the Q98.5 morning show and it was brought up that OPS is only testing this at the elementary school level. Also, they are not the first district to implement a similar policy -- Papillion Lavista has a similar policy in which 0's are given only as a last resort (jump to page 10): http://www.paplv.org/forparents/Documents/Student%20Handbooks/PLS%20Student%20Handbook%202009-2010%20for%20web%20(2).pdf (broken link)

The handbook lists disciplinary actions the student is subject to for incomplete assignments BEFORE incomplete work becomes "unaccepted". This leads me to believe they probably use the extra study halls, detentions, and tutoring time to make up that incomplete work, and only if they fail after those are attempted, will they get a 0.

I could not find out any info on OPS's actual policy, but I will be suprised if they truly get a 50 for no work. When I was in school (11 years ago) a late assignment was automatically deducted 50%. So a 50 was the BEST I could get on an assignment.

I'd like to see more info on this policy before passing judgement based on an article written for a second rate television news station.
