Earlier starts add to sleep loss
By Michaela Saunders
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Getting out the door 15 minutes earlier each morning might not sound too tough, but for teens already short on sleep, it can be brutal.

The typical teen functions best on about nine hours of sleep each night, according to an ever-growing body of research.

But teens average only seven hours of sleep each night, so the Omaha Public Schools' decision to start the high school day 15 minutes earlier no doubt is adding to sleep deprivation.

“Realistically, 15 minutes a day, I'm not convinced that's not going to have a significant effect on people,” said Brett Kuhn, an Omaha sleep specialist. “But when you add that 15 minutes to what's already going on, it can be the straw that breaks the camel's back.”

All I can say is "good god." Most students get 7 hours of sleep because they're jacking around on video games, the internet, or watching TV.

I'm sorry, but "most" kids are not strung out working, studying, or playing sports 17 hours a day. The elite might be but that's a very small percentage.

The typical kid who goes to class and is involved in a few extracurriculars shouldn't have much problem with getting enough sleep. Good lord, they act like high school is all of a sudden more difficult than it used to be.

I'll admit that class at 6:55 is pretty darn early but they signed up for that before the adjustment, so 6:40 doesn't seem like a big deal to me. I just have no question that a typical student can find 15 minutes to spare a day.

Its the pansy-ification of America.

The entire world is ran by people who function on less than enough sleep. The kids might as well get used to it.

so true

btw: on a side note:

why do school's have easter holiday week off and also a week off for spring break

and also all these "teacher in-service days"

with the kids skipping schools so much when their is school and their being so many days off for ops students

and ops "allegdly" being broke (see) http://www.omaha.com/article/2010031...01/703169910/0

one wonders how those kids learn anything and one wonders where our tax dollars is really going

My wife and I talked about it. If we ever have kids we'll just pony up tuition for private school.

that is a good idea.

the omaha public school system has become a joke thanks to mackiel and the OPS board.

(btw cutting the ops board from 12 members to 10 members would be good idea right now to save money.

Benson and Central btw dont have a principal cause both are retiring

and I hope they get a General patton like prinicpal and not a patton-leather wimpy principal for both schools.

the kids at both those schools

have no respect (see) http://www.omaha.com/article/20100319/NEWS01/100319500

and fear for the staff like Omaha North 's and Omaha Burke's folks do.

(I btw am a graduate of Omaha North and proud of it.

You hit the nail squarely on the head.

I've raised 3 kids. Teenagers aren't losing sleep because of school and work.

What always surprised me about my 3 kids was that they seemed to have the ability to sleep till about 2:00 PM on Saturday, and actually made up for the lack of sleep through the week. I couldn't sleep until that time if my life depended on it.

The Public Pulse, April 1 - Omaha.com

Pay attention, don’t compete

In a March 29 news story on increasing class sizes, “OPS pupils may learn three more is a crowd,” I found the paper’s phrasing of the situation very telling, referencing how many children compete for the teacher’s attention.

Maybe if the children were paying attention instead, they would learn more.
