I really hope that the city council votes to keep bars open to two. This would be a great thing to help keep younger people in the metro.

Out of curiosity, how does keeping bars open until 2:00 help keep younger people in the metro? Is it because they're so drunk they can't stagger home?

You do know that there are other things than getting smashed that go on in bars right? People like to play games, socialize, eat, and listen to live music. Being able to have concerts go past 12:45 would be a huge boon for the city. I have played in bands for most of my life, both locally and nationally, and people from touring bands are always shocked how early things have to stop here. It really does give out of town younger people a negative opinoin about the city.

Omaha has pulled in some really good events. And with those events, it draws crowds and the younger people are now much less apt to leave for other places that are entertainment based.

Omaha Rocks, the one hour is an important difference for 'some' events that by pass us. By raising it to 2AM we now can compete with most of the US for these events and bring even more tourism dollars here as well as maybe continue to pull more younger people to this city.

2AM is better than 1AM as only 5% of America closes the bar before 2AM. Later than 2AM doesn't make much of a difference because only 20% of america closes after 2AM.

By staying in the 2AM closing-time shadows we are now in the 'zone' of competition we want to be in, that will help us economically.

If the proposal was for 5AM, I would then be much more leery as it wouldn't help us in any way. All that would do is begin to pull the 'entertainment is most important' crowd that brings little value to society.

it was a HUGE culture shock to come here from Wisconsin and learn that "bar time" was 1 A.M. I actually thought it was a joke when they told us it was last call the first time I was out here...I really don't see how this will hurt the city at all...plus if I'm not mistaken Omaha is one of the highest cities for citing DUI tickets...so you are only boosting the local economy with having those repo'd cars and court fees being paid...

I am glad that Omaha is changing this. TAB, it was a culture shock for me also. I know there are nay-sayers who disagree, but Omaha is the only top 50 city in the US that is not open until 2:00 or later.

Also wouldn't this increase revenue based on taxing of alcohol and food sales?

And it will keep people from going to Iowa to continue chasing a buzz (though people will always go to the casinos).

I see this as a win win, and it should be good overall for Omaha, and to help keep the downtown/Market area booming. This must be done imho.

Although I don't like bars and I don't drink I think keeping bars open till 2am just makes sense.

Doesn't this come up every year and get voted down by the idiots on Omaha's city council?

Does anyone know their complaints? Do they have any valid reason for not wanting more tax revenue from alcohol sales? It's kind of hard to understand as Omaha grows into a strong mid-sized market.
