A suburban Omaha man has died after being strangled by his 9-foot, 25-pound pet boa constrictor, authorities said Thursday. Cory Byrne, 34, of Papillion died Wednesday night at a local hospital, just hours after police and paramedics pried the snake from around his neck, police said.

Neb. Man Dies After Being Strangled by Pet Snake - ABC News

And this thing is small compared to the monsters running loose in FL. I have no idea why people keep large snakes as pets, and why they're even allowed to.

Default But it was soooo cool

For the life of me, I'll never understand why we allow ownership of exotic wild animals. It's not only stupid, it's deadly.

First off, get ready. You may get castigated by a certain member of this forum for DARING to talk about the news here. "No NEWSDUMPING allowed here!"

Anywhoo... This whole tragedy strikes me as odd, partly because I don't like snakes and absolutely cannot imagine ever having one as a pet.

I was also surprised to read that this is the first case, in the United States, where a Boa Constrictor has strangled somebody.

Even so, it really does seem stupid to me that people try to have wild animals as pets. I may like tigers and think they're beautiful, but they're wild animals - and huge - and would NOT make good pets!

Is it true you can get a snake to release you if you pour alcohol on it? Give it a dose of booze? I thought I heard that once.

In any case, how fast can they constrict? I thought it was a slow crushing process rather than a quick violent squeeze. He didn't have time to do something? Even kill it or something?

I guess I'm not sure how much time you have between the time your neck is squeezed and the time you pass out.

I don't know how you can kill it if it wraps around your arms and you can't move?? They weigh a lot to, he might have been stuck down on the ground an unable to walk to the kitchen to grab a knife. How would you kill it with your bare hands? Break it's neck, lol?

Me neither! I'm also thinking about that Woman who owned a Gorilla that attacked her friend and tore off her face. There are so many Dogs and Cats in Shelters that need a good home. I'll never understand the allure of these "exotic" pets that sooner or later go on the attack.

I find snakes to be fascinating creatures. That said, when a boa gets to be a certain size, maybe it shouldn't be kept as a pet.

I've also owned iguanas in the past and had an aquarium with fish. Sometimes it's just interesting to have a pet besides a dog/cat.
