I love your posts Fontucky - couldn't agree with you more. I grew up in OC and know some amazing people who are very caring and decent people. Now, we all know the East Coast doesn't have any superficial people.

I'm considering relocating from Boston to Newport Beach area for a fantastic job opportunity. Career-wise, it will would certainly vault me to a new level but I'm curious if I am in any way compatible for the culture.

Please let me know what you think and any advice on where I should live.

About me
- 25 M single so need opportunities for socialising
- Intelligent and practical with a laid back, flexible personality
- Lived in Massachusetts my whole life
- No friends/family in So Cal. Actually had never visited prior to interviewing
- Like living in Boston because I can walk to bars/restaurants and have a solid social network here. Its home.
- Like the beach but I live in a city now so not a surfer/mountain biker ect.
- Expected salary in Newport Beach ~100k/yr. (rent budget of ~$1600)
- Not independently wealthy so overly materialistic women probably wont find me too appealing

I guess my main question is, would I be happy enough moving to Newport Beach area given this would mostly be a career driven decision? I'm thinking it wouldn't be the worst thing to live near the beach in nice weather for a couple years but not sure if this is enough to uproot.

Thoughts appreciated.

I don't believe your post is real. Could it be YOU are the real phony?

Brand new user name and your first and only thread is this one. 25 yrs old with a job making 100k in this economy. Getting hired from 3,000 miles away...not impossible but NOT likely.

I'd like to note that the OP said that he wasn't "independently wealthy, so overly materialistic women probably won't find me too appealing". He did not say that he finds materialistic women unappealing . In fact, my take on it, is if they chase you for your money or possessions only, then treat them with the same regard they deserve, and kick 'em to the curb when you're done. For heaven's sake, don't fall in love.

"Love" is Waaaaaaayyyy overrated. Love like you have for your children is very different from the LUST that most relationships start out as.

There've been a lot of bogus posts here lately...so try not to take it personally.

What sort of company will you be working for?

Default yankee goes to newport

coast to coast....

also contemplating the move from boston...but...different phase of my life (divorced single dad whose youngest is leaving for college in 2 months). i took a "topical glance" at some of the responses to your post.

if i was in your shoes....i too would stay close to the beach for a bit more pulse/vibrancy...so...huntington or newport (on the margin, seal and sunset a bit more bohemian than newport). trend inland and you'll, to a greater degree, be invading the planet of the soccer moms.

i hate sweeping generalizations...but...it is a less cerebral setting than new england. superseding that -- CA is "marvelous"...and...it's a great time of your life to live there and explore it.

Couldn't disagree with you more....I lived there for 7 years, founded and sold a high tech electronic manufacturing business with over 200 employees(including over 30 engineers) in Southboro, and I can tell you that's not the experience I recollect. Coming from a very vibrant atmosphere in LA to Mass. was a culture shock to the max. I missed the conversations I used to have in LA, with random strangers I would meet in daily life and in parties, about business ventures, emerging technologies and it's impact on society and the world as we know, and many other things of interests.

California is vast, it's like a country on it's own, with over 1.8 Trillion dollars economy. Can't say that the 6th largest economy in the world happened by accident. It's the people of California that made it happen.
There is a reason why over 60% of all VC money comes to California companies, and why majority of the emerging technologies are developed here.

I live in Silicon Valley now and cannot over emphasize what an electrifying place it is. I am sure I could say the same thing about Southern California also, since I lived there for over a decade and had similar experience.

technocrat...

hard to opine without "generalizing"...but re your point...duly noted. IMHO, it's a testament to the character of a community (CA) and it's individuals...how well they can weather an economic storm where...hypothetically...real estate goes sideways for a decade. in other words, being able to thrive in a world where wealth isn't magically created via ever-escalating real estate prices. along those lines, CA probably does have the intellectual/technical backbone to remain vibrant through the economic malaise....perhaps more so than some other areas.
