The folks on my current home state forum in VA think I'm nuts because I was telling them that back when I was in school (the 60s and 70s) in Orange County school didn't start until late September, almost October. Am I remembering correctly and when and why did it change? I'm thinking it's maybe because most schools didn't have air conditioning back then. Any OC "old timers" like Fontucky want to confirm or deny?

Back in the 50s, 60s, etc most So Ca schools started the About the first Monday after the 15th or maybe the closest Monday to the 15th. In other parts of Ca they started the Mon after Labor day, so you are about right, but probably off a week or two. I wish it was still that way. We all know, many places, especially Ca some of the hottest weather can occur in Sept and June is very seldom all that hot. Why not go to school from mid or late Sept until about the 20th of June.

I graduated from Highschool in Los Angeles in the 50s. Graduation was the closest Friday (actually Thurs) to June 15th.

Yeah that could have made it as late as the 21st. The other excellent reason for ending it later was June gloom as good beach weather didn't really occur until often as late as fourth of July (I guess that would still be the case). So what caused the change? Inlanders imposing their ways?

It's always been the first Monday after Labor Day for me. Schools in Murrieta go back in early August, but they get lots of time off during the year to make up for it.

Even college (UC) didn't start until after Admissions Day. I guess we didn't have a 180 day school year back then.

Another vote for around the 15th in the late 50's and 60's. Always after Labor Day because that's when Sears had school dresses on sale. 3/$10.00. I hated that sale.

I can remember going to SDSU and yes, it was about the middle of Sept. Our spring finals were the first week of June and we didn't get a break between fall and spring simesters. We got our 2 week Christmas break, went back the day after New Years and fall/winter finals started about 2 weeks later. Sorority and Frat rush started about the 5th or 6th of Sept, the first footbaall game was around the weekend of Sept 15th or maybe even the following week.

you are hitting my memory spot. I remember Bullocks before school sale, but think it was the last week of August. One year, they had the cutest dresses on sale for about $3.99 or maybe $4.99. I can still see that dress when I close my eyes. Thank God it came in more than one color cause there probably were 50 of them walking around school the first day...

I attended OC public schools in the 80's and we usually started right around Labor Day. Some times the day after, some times the week before. I think once or twice we even started the Thursday or Friday before, then had a three day weekend. My birthday is June 19 and I was always out by then although once or twice the last day was only a day or two before.
