I was fortunate to be hired for a public sector job in central Orange County and will be moving to OC soon from elsewhere in CA.

I've calculated that I'll take home $2400/month, my 10 yr old car is paid for and I have no debts. I'm in my mid 20's and this is the first time I'll be out on my own, but I'll be living with a relative there temporarily while until I get a place.

I know it's kind of a vague question, but what kind of quality of life can I expect in Socal with that salary? Decent I hope? I don't really have a basis as I've spent the last few years working full time, living at home, supporting a sick parent, and going to school.

Any feedback so I can set some realistic expectations would be appreciated.

Well you can share a 2 bedroom apartment with someone and you'll still have to be fairly careful about your spending. Living on your own would be really tight on that budget.

yup, sharing a 2br with a roommate is the most common situation for someone in their 20's with that level of income. A studio apartment should also be doable on that income if roommates are out of the question, given you manage your money reasonably well.

Somewhere between 26.56 and 37.84.

Do not choose Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna or any other upscale community, since absolutely everything costs more there. Northern OC is more reasonable and definitely less snooty.

I also want to live in OC and don't know in which city yet. Maybe Laguna Nigel?

Find a job first. Live close to it.

If you are a hot looking female:

Step 1: Pick a city, any city.
Step 2: Identify rich eligible bachelors in that city.
Step 3. Hook and reel.
Step 4. There is no step 4.

I'd probably rule out Laguna Niguel for that.
