Ha...Russlancea is actually Rhus lancea, a drought-tolerant tree I studied horticulture and thought Russ lancea would throw people off. Oh, and I'm happily married to my husband, so girlfriend should be girl friend.

My friend and her husband have kinda been on pins and needles for years just wondering if he would lose his job as a Boeing mechanic. I know someone else who works for...Northrop? They've laid off a lot also, so I wonder if he's still with them. So sad what's going on.

My brother-in-law is in aerospace, but his company works on satellites. How hard is it to transition from airplanes to satellites? What else can these poor laid-off aerospace workers do now?

I remember those days very well. I was a hardware engineer at a small company in San Diego. Our company went broke in early 1971. I was lucky and was able to get a better, higher paying job in Silicon Valley. That was only because of personal connections that literally created a job position for me as the company had a hiring freeze.

In the early 90's, the largest employer in San Diego, General Dynamics, closed down completely eliminating 22,000 jobs.

hmm well did you know that Seattle Boeing is moving to Long Beach? My friend who works there is going to have to move to a different Boeing in Everett since his job is moving to Long Beach.

Well, that is good news for California but doesn't seem very logical.

Logical or not, it's happening.

Boeing may cut white-collar jobs here, too | Business & Technology | The Seattle Times

Such a shame to see the high wage, high skill linchpin of the Southern California economy fade away (with nothing to replace it). Happened to an extent in Santa Clara County, but at least the tech boom was gearing up at the same time.

Those are old-economy dinosaur jobs. Time to move on.

I've worked with many former aerospace employees that were laid off over the years and most were hellishly lazy.

Not bad people but they must of had it really easy at their prior jobs. Either that or there was a reason why they were let go. A few worked hard, but they were definitely in the minority.

Hopefully they find other jobs quickly .

Could depend on whether they've upgraded their skills. One problem with many older workers is they still use 1990s tools and methods and are unfamiliar with current ways of doing things.
