Good friends of ours will be getting married at Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, Feb 2012. Since we're coming from Connecticut, we're planning on turning this into a week or a ten day visit. We don't really want to spend $1,000 per night to stay at Pelican, so we're looking for another decent hotel in the area. We'd like a place maybe in a downtown area where we can walk to bars or pubs. We're not into the clubbing scene so it doesn't have to be wild (not sure "wild" even exists in Orange). If you have any other places to recommend outside of Orange County, we're open to that as well. We want to stay away from downtown LA or SD, and prefer to be in a beachy/suburban area.

Also, I know it's a bit "cool" there for the beach in February, so what are some recommendations for a couple in their upper 20's to do in the area? We're willing to drive up to 90 minutes per day to see some sights.

Thank you all kindly. Enjoy the sunny weather for us Northeasterners as we enjoy feet of snow.
Try PriceLine.com. I once got a $200 room in Garden Grove for only $35.

Did they offer hourly rates for their rooms?

There is a Hyatt in Newport and Huntington Beach that I know are very nice, but I would imagine they would be some what expensive.
