I am from Santa Maria, CA (45 min north of Santa Barbara) planning on moving to LB with my long time boyfriend in about a year or so. (I know, asking for advice really for in advanced.) He will be attending CSULB and I would be in the Radiology Tech program at El Camino College in Torrance. We are fine with a decent studio in LB (we're not high maintenance people but would at least find a place with a little character) for at most $800 inc. utilities. If his brother plans to move he'd offer to sleep in our living room if we got a 1 BR in which we'd raise our budget for $1000- $1100 inc. utilities. We would have a reasonable amount of money saved up by then (he recieves A LOT of financial aid as well as social security) at least $5000 on my part alone so we have a safe cushion in order to ease into the new city. After saying all this, I have many many questions!

1. Where is the best area for 2 students with a part time job to get a 1 BR or studio in LB considering the commute, a "cool" neighborhood for college kids?

2. What is your opinion about my commute to ECC? Do able? Not do able? Best transit? Carpool, Bus, my own vehicle (which I have)?

3. Do you think having a min wage job while being a student will be enough for my future lifestyle? Considering my cushion money + his.

4. I'm trying to land a caregiving job in my current city ( a lot of college kids get these jobs easily where I'm from) so it would be easier for me to get some kind of caregiving job in LB so I'd get $10 - 12/hr. Is there really a market for caregiving jobs in LB? If not, what kind of job experience do you think I should gain now in order to land a job with more pay in LB? Waitressing?

5. I also have the option to attend Cypress for their Rad Tech program. Which school do you think would better considering commute and the general area of each school?

Any information you'd feel would be helpful for me in my future endeavors would be greatly appreciated!

I decided to post this thread in the OC forum because it seemed like a lot more people had posted long beach info in this thread rather than the LA one.
