Just because the LA times says it is doesn't make it so. You can't pigeon hole an entire city brause of a small section of downtown that attracts all the knuckleheads and jabronies from the 909.

I'ts a great coastal city that is actually affordable.

yeah i grew up there and it was a great city to live in. its the people that infiltrate from other cities (mostly north OC and riv/sbdo counties) that trash it.

balboa has problems too, but then its because of the tourism in the area, not because newport is a bad place to live

Main and Chapman would be a definite no. That area feeds into Portola Jr. High, where there is a lot of gang and drug activity.

I would stay clear from Slater street. I use to live in Huntington Beach and that are was known as Slater slum. I use to live in Huntington Beach and that area was considered the bad area. I looking to move back to Huntington Beach, if you are looking for a really nice area, Irvine is the best. I currently live in area, it is pricey but worth it in my opinion. I have a full review on Yelp.com search for Somerset in Irvine so you can read my full review.

Good luck with your search.

This deends on where and how close to main and chapman. You are nto right at the intersection. Are you looking on the north or south side of Chapman? East or west of Batavia?

Slater at Beach Blvd is the only location that gets a little iffy, anywhere west of Beach on Slater is nice and expensive neighborhoods.

What makes me laugh is when some see a few Hispanic people walking around an intersection and they call the area the slums. I can imagine what they think of most other cities where Hispanics make up a much larger population like Long Beach or Anaheim. I have lived in many cities in the SoCal, including Torrance/Redondo and Huntington Beach is the best place I've lived in by far.

Starts getting better west of Gothard. I would stay away from most neighborhoods between Beach and Gothard.

That being said, The gang "problem" in HB is pretty much kept in check by the local hs football teams and the police. Mostly tagging and public drunkeness and other petty crimes.

A) The Jersey Shore is actually very nice.
B) There are very few guidos in Huntington Beach.

You need to step away from the TV. Even with all the attention whores downtown, HB is still a pretty nice place.
