Yeah, they're in off-season manning now. If the fire season was open, the stations would be 24/7.

Is it fire season now? If not, shouldn't the roads be open?

Well, the guard stations are closed at night and on weekends, so I'd say the answer to this is NO. You could get the official word at the USFS or Cal Fire websites. Maye even the OCFA site.

Access to the roads in the off season depends on their condition. Maintenance has been cut back, so who knows. Depends on what the rains have done to them.

Isn't there a gate at the back of Silverado Canyon?

Not sure, but I know there's access via Black Star Cyn Rd.

It would suck getting half way up the mountain on a narrow road, hitting a locked gate, and not being able to turn around.

I drove up Skyline Dr out of the south end of Corona back in 2002, in either September or October. Was driving towards Sierra Peak (I think), and ended up with a giant hole in my gas tank, and had to coast back down to Corona with gas hemorrhaging out of the tank.

It wasn't a good experience. Be careful if you go on those roads Charles, but I'm sure if you take the Chick Magnet, you'll have a better shot getting up there than I did.
