The Big CM is an extremely diverse city, probably the closest thing to city as it gets. A lot of young people, single people, and people with family's.

Costa Mesa, is the type of city that can ruin your life or make your life better. Some call it Costa Mexico, The big CM, Costa Missery, Costa Magical. Some people can Enjoy CM and do activities like go to the beach, skate, surf, and carry on with there life. Others go to work and contribute to society, Mind there own business and move peacefully through the realm of CM and ignore the negativity, but don't be blind.

Other people can make CM a living hell, for you and for them. The truth is, its all about who you hang out with down here. The facts are that there are junkies, and gangsters, live and present unfortunatley. They sell narcotics to people and commit violent crimes to benefit themselves and their gang(s). There is a large drug scene amongst the youth and the adults, it's unfortunate because often parents participate in drug use with their children. There is also a lot of Graffiti, it is pretty popular here, its a hobby amongst the youth like surfing and skating. in those three subcultures drug use seems to be popular.

Most of CM is Mexican, White, Black, and last asian. There are low income areas, and middle class areas. Very few areas in CM are expensive, it just depends. There are many places to get food. Extremely good Mexican Resteraunts, some sushi spots to. A lot of FAST FOOD spots haha.
( BEST IS IN-N-OUT there are two)

There is a local skate park, and people often go to newport beach to get some good waves when there is a swell.

There are thrift stores, a soup kitchen, a GOODWILL, a smart and final, and many 99cent stores. pretty awsome. some of the hippest stuff is from goodwill in my opinion.

Some areas are actually not safe to walk around ALONE at night, walk in groups at night. Daytime is much safer. avoid areas with shoes on the wire. If you have children i do not recommend Lions park, don't take your kids just a bunch of hobo's.

Neighboring cities with Newport Beach on our South West Sides. We are Neighboring with Santa Ana on our North East side and Irvine with out south east side. North of us is Huntington beach and Fountain valley.

Bad Neighborhood to Good Neighborhood. Looks can deceive you on the south east side....
Police response calls are quick (personal exp)

Costa Mesa is pretty unique in OC in that it really has two really opposite sides (Anaheim might be another one). You can have a $800K to $1,000,000 houses selling on one side of town, and on another side, you have gangs, drugs and crime.

19th Street is a good example of this. On one side, Eastside, near Irvine Bld, you have a houses selling up to a million dollars, sharing schools with Newport Beach, and within walking distance of fancy boutiques in Westcliff Plaza.

On the other side Westside, near the corner of Placentia, not more than a mile or two away, you have soup kitchens, meth houses, gangs and crime, and a couple of the worst elementary schools in this area of the County.

You also have one of the fanciest malls in the US (South Coast Plaza), not far from run down apartment complexes where several families are croweded into one unit.

The bottom line is that unlike some other cities in OC, Costa Mesa is one where someone moving to the area should ask around before getting an apartment or buying a house. Even on the nicer Eastside, there are certain streets that are known as being nice, and others that are known as being a tad shady.
