Alternatively, would a condo or even standalone home, NOT ocean view, but with relatively new construction, and not in a college student filled area be had for this amount?

before buying our condo, we rented a two bedroom townhome - 1 mile from the beach - for under $1500. Huntington Harbour Area.

Ocean view is possible, but oyu may have to sacrifice other ameneties like parking, or a yard. Some pleaces have "Peek a boo" ocean views. In other words one window when viewed at the correct angle allows you to see the ocean, but you do not have broad vista views.

There is a mobile home park in Huntington Beach that has ocean views. The space rent is pricy, but you can get a nice home real cheap. It is called Huntington by the Sea and is located on Newland and PCH.
