I have just recently moved to Lake Forest and have my adult daughter arriving from the UK to visit at the end of June. I would like to take her horseback riding (English or western trail) to see some of the countryside. I have tried the usual google searches etc but not found anything particularly nearby. Can anyone recommend somewhere please say within about 20miles or so of Lake Forest?

There are beautiful trails in and around Coto (maybe even Trabuco) but I'm not sure where you would get the horses. I would google stables/riding facilities in those areas and call to see if they offer trail rides, I know sometimes places do but don't always advertise it on their websites!

Whiting Ranch(Santiago Canyon) has equestrian trails. Santiago Equestrian Center has access to those trails, but I'm not sure if they do trail rides or not. I bet if you contact them they can point you in the right direction, though.

Outside of that, Norco would work, but it's a bit of a drive. There are a few places to do trail rides along the Santa Ana River in Norco.

San Juan Capistrano is well-known for being an equestrian community and has quite a few stables and lots of trails in the hills surrounding the town. Here's a map of the equestrian trails: City of San Juan Capistrano : Recreational Trails Map

A friend of mine used to board her horse at Sycamore Trails: Sycamore Trails Stables: Trail Riding

Here are a couple more SJC horse links:

Irvine Park has an equestrian center. You can just go out there and ask them where to go for the type of trails you are seeking and where you can rent horses.

I know this is late, but thought I would chime in. All of the places listed above are private boarding facilities that do not rent horses for public riding. In OC, the only place that I know of that has a rent string is Irvine Park, located next to Peacock Hill Equestrian Center (the private boarding facility. I used to board my horse here before moving to OPA). It is a chaperoned ride through trails surrounding the park. They also have pony rides. The Hart Ranch used to operate a rent string off of the 91 in Anaheim Hills, but that closed down years ago. They may still have an operation out in Carbon Canyon in Brea?

Outside of that, you'd have to venture out to Norco or near the LA Equestrian Center for daily rentals. There is a guided rental string that goes through the wineries in Temecula. There may be some others around (maybe Lake Elsinore, Fallbrook or Julian areas?)
