If you see someone braking into a mailbox, of course dial 911. That isn't at all what I said.

The OP didn't witness this happening, in which case a USPIS investigation is the best course, because their PRIMARY job is investigating issues with THE MAIL. USPIS coordinates with local agencies all the time, but because they are a fed agency, they may/will be coordinating with multiple agencies and may have information transcending just a Sheriff's office or local PD.

With that being said, even though mail theft is a fed issue, any CA law enforcement officer can investigate, detain, cite or arrest for it - 530.5(e)cpc makes it illegal at the State level as well, so if you're so inclined to involve a local agency, more power to you.

Try calling your local postmaster and see if they will install a community box

The postal service likes them because it eases delivery

I have yet to see anything other than these "community mailboxes" in Aliso Viejo.

Aliso has a lot of newer communities. Much of Laguna Niguel and Dana Point still have good old-fashioned mailboxes, which surprised me when I moved here. I'd love to see them install community boxes, I suppose the associations think it detracts from the neighborhood or something. I always take my mail to the post office to send, I simply can't imagine putting in the box and raising the flag in this day and age.

We ain't going to the party
We ain't going to the game
We ain't going to the disco
Ain't gonna cruise down main

We're stealing people's mail
stealing people's mail
stealing people's mail
On a friday night

Drivin' in the mountains
Winding 'round and 'round
Rummage thru your mailboxes
Take your mail back to town

And we got license plates, wedding gifts, tax returns
Checks to politicians from real estate firms
Money, bills and cancelled checks
Pretty funny pictures of your kids

We're gonna steal your mail
On a Friday night
We're gonna steal your mail
By the pale moonlight

We got grocery sackful after grocery sackful
After grocery sackful after grocery sackful
After grocery sackful after grocery sackful
Of the private lives of you
Ha Ha

People say that we're crazy
We're sick and all alone
But when we read your letters
We're rolling on the floor

We got more license plates, wedding gifts, tax returns
Checks to politicians from real estate firms
Money, bills and cancelled checks
We cut relationships with your friends

We're gonna steal your mail
On a Friday night
We're gonna steal your mail
By the pale moonlight

We better not get caught
We'll be dumped in institutions
Where we'll be drugged and shocked
'Til we come out born-again Christians
