As far as areas to avoid in Seal Beach: The entire area is very safe.
There is a large naval weapons depot in the area (which also borders Huntington Harbour). Very secure and very safe and I haven't seen any cause for alarm. The Leisure World retirement community has a lot of cranky old libertarians that can't drive. But most are off the road after the early bird specials end.

You can never go wrong if you stay on the ocean side of PCH.

The Gables is in Huntington Harbour. I googled "John Patrick Rogers" he does seem batsh1t crazy - but with any large condo or apartment community (in any part of the country) you will find your share of oddballs. We have a few in ours, but they all seem rather self contained and docile.

The Harbour Area is very eclectic. The very well off live on the islands. On shore there are tons of condos and private apartment homes. Very interesting mix of people too. Best way to look is just walk the neighborhood and see what you like.

Oh thankyou for your help!

We are actually from Tasmania as well! haha and knowing tasmania we probably know her, what is her name? She is totally missing out, California is beautiful! Hence why we are moving there haha. we have visited twice now and love it!

Yes Huntington is quite touristy, i think we are leaning more towards Huntington harbor or seal beach it seems a little more relaxed!

Its really hard trying to find a home sitting on the other side of the world.

cheers
Sorry for the late reply! : ] no problem!
Yes HB is very touristy especially in the summer >_< can also be a high traffic area. I like Seal beach , I live in long beach which is just north of there currently but I hate it. Seal beach seems to be a sleepy kind of area and I know there's a military base and there's leisure world haha.

oh that's great your from Tassie! whereabouts may I ask? I definitely want to go there some day it looks so gorgeous. Well my friend is Sarah Wysocki, she has a brother Chad and a younger sister Tegan.

She lives in New Norfolk.

I hope she'll come here some day too I really want to show her all the neat things out here.

I guess my only thing is, our economy and transportation over here is pretty bad haha and our healthcare system is too compared to your's if you get sick or something.

Other then that I like it.

We usually gripe about where we live lol but we could always be worse off. Well there's good and bad to every part of the world , it's always a trade. : D

I hope you enjoy living here, feel free to message me anytime! i'm sure there's lots of neat things you'll discover after your move and I admire those who are willing to move long distances I myself am one of those people and not a true native to california either.

Smile Retirees aren't all cranky libertarians

My husband and I are in our mid-60s and are about to retire from the nasty politics and freezing cold in Illinois to the HB or Seal Beach area. My husband's sons live there, and one of the sons and his wife are expecting our first granddaughter. I certainly hope that we won't be looked upon as cranky libertarians, as we are anything but! Now all we have to do is figure out where to live on a fixed income with minimal needs other than Leisure World. I looked at this thread for some ideas.

Hey peghello! I just moved here from IL about 1.5yrs ago so if you need any guidance, just let me know!

As for the HB apt ideas OZ, we had rented an apt at ParkView Apts on Delaware/Yorktown. It's about 1.5mi from the beach and I absolutely loved the manager! They run another building on the other side of town off of Heil too.

My wife and I are in the same position on we are moving from Illinois. We are actually travelling to Seal Beach with a camper trailer and because I am retired military, staying in the camper on the Naval Station there until we find a place to live. From afar, we seem to be set on the lifestyle and culture of HB or Seal Beach. Our budget for housing is $1300 or below. Also, I hope to attend school since uncle sam will be paying me a decent amount for living expenses so I need to be fairly close to decent colleges and hope to transfer to Cal State Long Beach eventually. How long is the drive from HB and Seal Beach to Cal St LB?

InsomniaOC, I should probably talk to you lol as we are from IL. How much are the apts there at Parkview? We are a young early 40's couple who are moving because we are tired of this weather and lifestyle. We would like to get a couple of part time jobs and chill with sandals and shorts every day. I hope that's possible there cuz we're selling everything, loading up the camper and headed there the first of May (2013). Temporarily at Seal Beach Naval St until we find a place. Looking for new fun friends too!

Hey RodDawn! For Parkview, you're prob looking at around $1500-$1600 but it is a relatively quiet building, which I liked a lot. Moved out of there to a place that had a pool so the kid could run around - but now we totally regret it.I'll msg you w/ some other ideas so I don't clog up Oz's thread. Welcome to the OC!

BTW - whoever brought up John Patrick ROgers - thank you. I just HAD to Google it!

Default We're On Our Way!

Well, we sold our house in one day and are headed to OC next week to look for a place to live! Would love to hear an update from RodDawn to find out where they ended up. And would especially love to be in touch with InsomniacOC to see if you have the name of a rental agency we could work with to look at places from Seal Beach to Laguna. Our first priority is a safe place, of course, but walkability and/or a great view are at the top of the list. We are spoiled because we can walk to "town" and to restaurants where we currently live. Would rather have a view than a large place. Do you still recommend Parkview Apts? We're so looking forward to leaving the Chicago weather behind us, and to meet our new granddaughter who is due to arrive at any moment in Huntington Beach!

Yes, I was talking about Long Beach, which is definitely in L.A. County.

I've never encountered a "bad" part of Seal Beach.
