I am a single 24 year old male, I will be working at Boeing Seal beach making approx 80k after taxes. I am looking to buy a home, I want to live in an area with young professionals, I was reading about long beach and Huntington, but not sure if the vibe there is what I am looking for. Housing in Newport seems way out of my price range as well. Also I am trying to rent this home I buy out if I transfer, so I am looking for a popular place where rental units do not stay vacant. I was hoping to spend around 250-320K on a small home or apartment. I'm originally from NYC so I love things to do in walking distance.

Where would be a good place for me to buy a home??

Thanks for your guys' help!

You can get a decent condo, within a mile of the ocean (and near the Boeing Plants) in your price range in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach. While not an Urban environment, there are plenty of amenities, restaurants, bars within walking distance.

Start in the Huntington Harbour Area.

The Caveat is to make sure the property you want to buy is not on leased land. Also make sure the HOA has a nice cash reserve and is proactive in making repairs.

Hmmm after looking at those areas it seems very family oriented. Are there any other places with a downtown vibe for a single young professional? Definitely would like close by bars that I could go to happy hr for to meet new people.

Downtown Seal Beach has a nice laid-back village vibe to it. Good bars. Very close to Belmont Shore if you want something clubbier.

The Huntington Harbour IS family oriented. But there are still decent places around for weekday hanging out. Downtown HB (totally nuts during the summer) is a quick bike trail ride.

I would suggest downtown Huntington Beach. Not sure that you can find a condo in your price range, but apartments go for around 1800 - 2200 month. I lived downtown when I first moved to CA. Very fun atmosphere. But also very transient, and the friends you make won't hang around for long.

What are your thoughts on long beach? The housing there is much cheaper. Is the area really as bad as people say it is??

Long Beach is a big place, and there are definitely good areas and not so good areas. Here's an older city data post that might be helpful:

Try downtown long beach. (the nice part of downtown.) Lively, fun and not a bad place to live if you do nto have kids.

Depends on where. Downtown proper is fine(I think the rule is don't go above 6th street? don't remember), but the commute is going to be a pain on surface streets. Being from NYC I doubt downtown Huntington is your vibe. Downtown Long Beach would be the closest thing to that NYC urban life. Downtown Santa Ana if you're adventuresome.

Not really. Very nice units in our condo community 1 mile off the beach are going for 300K-330K

Units on leased land (beware) are going for under 200K
