800 is decent credit.

However, you should live by this [MOSTLY UNHEARD OF PRINCIPLE IN AMERICA]: Never spend money you don't have. If you live by that principle, you will avoid a world of stress and worry and you'll never have to worry about losing everything because you'll never owe anything.

Have you actually pulled your credit score/report to see how good/bad it is. Have you tried calling some of the companies and asking them what specification they use to quality for renting the apartment.

Even with bad credit, one can still get a credit card--with a $500 or $1,000 limit, that is. Credit Score is all about better terms, interest, and higher limits on unsecured credit cards. If one is planning to purchase a home or car, then best they really achieve highest score possible. Of course, achieving highest score possible is always a good thing to do.

Credit always matters. Especially in recent years with potential employers using it as an excuse NOT to hire someone. Even if you have little or no debt, credit is HUGE.

Fortunately, many states are passing laws that will not allow most employers to check your credit as part of their hiring process. I believe California is one of them.
