Just wondering what everyone thinks of Irvine for tech startups, esp. compared to Silicon beach.

There's a thriving tech market, but numbers wise it's not going to compare to LA. Check out Socaltech.com

Lots of tech in LA, especially the westside. however, it pretty entertainment focused for obvious reasons. irvine may be a better option depending on what industry you're trying to enter.

I vote for Irvine...it would be a much shorter commute for my husband than West LA

Irvine is an excellent location for a tech startup. Plenty there now, plenty of workers, and fairly diverse(particularly compared to SM/West LA), but the thing to understand that is Irvine's tech startup industry is less focused on flash and more on substance. You don't find a lot of trending websites or application developers that are in the news with flashy campaigns and little revenue model(outside of mroe pageviews), instead you find biotechs, financials, hardware, aerospace, other specialized software, etc. It's a different atmosphere.

The region has also been called the Tech Coast, as well
