I think San Diego has more to do and better beaches. More diverse and also less conservative.

SD is its own metro complete with pro sports teams for example. OC, while a large business and community base, still has a relationship as an outlying community of Los Angeles.
Still, for day to day activities (working, shopping, schools, etc) it probably doesn't make too much difference.

Not sure if SD is less conservative seeing that it has a strong military heritage. Maybe conservative in a different way. For example SD may be military conservative while OC has a lot of religious organizations (or it that just be my perception.)

North SD county is similar to south OC.

OC had military installations at one time but they have gone away.

I wouldn't say the "O" is like south OC (unless you mean inland). Perhaps Carlsbad is more like south OC, especially the newer developments.

Is the "O" the same thing as North San Diego County?

Not exactly. This is referring to Oceanside. Actually, it is most properly used in referring to the southern part of Oceanside (south "O", for example).
