I'm considering a move to Huntington Beach summer of 2014. I have a moderately autistic son who will be entering 4th grade next year. Anyone have any experience with the HB school district's Special Needs programs. Is it a very adversarial district in terms of IEP fulfillment? What are the best elementary and middle schools in town for special needs? etc.

I fear you are not getting any responses because there is not a good answer. CA schools have no money for basic services, let alone special services. It doesn't matter that they are required to offer the services.
The IEP process is long and tedious and even if you already have one, they will have to go thru everything again for their own process. And it will probably take you 6 mos to get things in place. Services are very minimum IMO.
The school we are in is ranked "one of the best" and honestly, I think they hate having special services kids because it brings down their scores.
I have heard how wonderful the HB schools are and if your child is "average" or above then they are great. But if you have a child that is "below average" or needs help, then good luck. You will have to fight for every step and be your child's advocate at every turn.

Thx for the honest answer. Am currently in Santa Clarita (north LA county) which is a mecca of sorts for special needs education. I employ a legal advocate for the IEP process and she has said much the same thing about HB that you indicated. Sounds like I will have to start the process early in order to get anywhere. Have you heard anything good or bad about KidA, a private special needs school in Irvine?

Sorry, no info on that school.
I really love living in HB and all it has to offer. I think every city probably has it's pros/cons with the school systems. I really had to push hard and stay on top of the process for my son to get assistance for reading. It finally happened and is working well for him. But if you are not your child's advocate and possibly even tick some people off a little with your persistence, they will definitely fall through the cracks.
